The desire to acquire shiny things....
Strange isn't it how we humans hanker after stuff we don't have and don't really need. Especially when the stuff is expensive and shiny.
I expect a smart psychologist could tell us why (please)! Take my be-love-ed 1675....... I owned a Steel GMT Master Pepsi on a Jubilee bracelet from about 1974 'till fairly recently. My once beloved wife bought it for my 25th birthday Aug 13th 1974, (yes I'm 60 today aaaaaaaaaaarrrrgh!!) During all that time I always wondered if I'd made the right choice of bracelet. I often found myself secretly admiring the GMT with the Oyster, and regularly toyed with the idea of buying the alternative to the Jubilee, and having it as an interchangeable spare. I was REALLY begining to lust after that Oyster!! I expect a lot of you have found yourselves having the same type of thoughts. I imagine you can all see where this is leading.......... So yes I did it ! I did the only thing a chap CAN do in this situation, Yep,I bought a 16710 (Coke) with, of course, the Oyster bracelet, naturally. I imagine you can all see where this is leading to too.......... How much IS a new Jubilee that'll fit the GMT Master II, I want one, I really want one!! I don't know why but I just gotta have one!! Will somebody out there just tell me whyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!! Last edited by Speedbird-1; 14 August 2009 at 08:28 AM.. Reason: Smelling mistake |

I think a jubilee bracelet could cost you around $500 upwards in good used condition.
It depends if you are buying new or used. Welcome and I hope you will enjoy the forums

Cheers guys,
I had a good day, a very beautiful, close personal friend of mine took me to to Standen, a lovely Victorian (1892) house in Sussex that is owned by the ( English )National Trust that is a showpiece for the Arts and Crafts movement. The house is full of William Morris wallpapers and textiles. Look it up if you don't know it or can't visit, it's a fascinating place. I highly recommend a visit if you're at all interested in 20thC design. Anyway, there we were, enjoying a pot of tea for two and sharing a very large slice of ginger cake in the late afternoon sunshine, when an elderly chap, (at least 61 ha ha!) asks if he and his missus can share our table. Well, they both joined us, lovely couple from Blackburn in Lancashire ( tea, coffee, an iced bun and a blueberry muffin the size of a VW beetle) We chatted about this and that for a while, then I noticed it and said, "nice watch". Well, you'll never guess what he was wearing, yes you got it, an Omega, a JAMES BOND Omega with, apparently "the textured dial face reminiscent of the grip on Bond's famous Walther PPK." He may or may not have seen my GMT but we spent the next 10 minutes listening to "Rolexes aren't worth the money and aren't accurate and are just for show any way, oh, and by the way Ian Fleming always intended for Bond to wear an Omega like the one on the moon" We listened politely for a while then eased ourselves away. It was a beautiful day, I was with a beautiful woman and it was my birthday, nothing was going to spoil it. I climbed into the soft black hide passenger seat of my friend's ( I shall call her Eleanor, for that is her name) new, shiny black Range Rover Sport (she has horses) and, as we rumbled slowly away I buzzed down the window and waved majesterially almost Ghandi like with my left hand (so he got a good look) at the other couple as they got onto their battered (Lime Green)1985 Toyota RAV4. I know, I know, I'm a smug, un-Christian SOB sometimes but you've just gotta take the simple pleasures where y'can . Anyway, I did smile nicely........ |

Blinding
Now THAT'S shiny!
I, of course have thick lustrous locks, black as a ravens wing that I have to flick back off my face like some crazed Czechoslovakian conductor (Czech Republic to you, mate) In truth I'm an ex-blonde, gone a bit salt and pepper these days, probably more salt than pepper. I have considered owning up to having a full head of skin. ( It's not a bald patch, it's a solar panel for a sex machine ) It's a great look but takes a good shaped head and more courage than I have at my disposal at the moment. Looks VERY good on you though JJ. Have I mentioned it was my birthday again, I think I got away with it............ |

I responded to a similar thread a couple of months ago, and this is how . . .
It's not you, Paul, it's the nature of the forum. This entire web site is devoted primarily to discussing various Rolexes, models, service, operation, etc. We also hear various other members singing the praises of their watches, in addition to looking at some seductive pictures. (I have noted before that there is a significant amount of photographic talent here.) All these variables synthesize to generate a longing for more watches. And I also believe there is truth to your statement, namely, items which we don't own carry with them a certain added appeal, a challenge if you will. There is also an unconscious psychology operating in which people tell often tell themselves, "If I only owned this, then I will feel more attractive, complete, etc.(fill in the blank)", which explains in part why sometimes people are not satisfied, regardless of how many watches they own. One cannot fill emotional needs with material items. And after all, possibility is always more exciting than reality. __________________

Hi Stan
I don't blame you for wanting the jubilee bracelet for the 16710 as well. There is something about the GMT and jubilee combo as Dan P's superb pics demonstrate. My 1675 is off to the workshop at the mo and the jubilee option is one that I'll be exploring on its return. Blakey PS - I 'ate you Butler.

Luverly Jubilee..........
Hi Cyril,
The Jubilee (why so called, any one know if it relates to any particular celebration?) Anyway yes, the jubilee was part of the whole iconic GMT Master image for me. I particularly liked the 'chequered flag' effect achieved by the centre section, I suppose that was a deliberate design intent? But, as I've said, you buy the blue shirt, you always wonder if the white shirt would have made you look even more handsome. I've had the Jubilee and lusted after the Oyster, now Iv'e got the Oyster and, well, you know the rest....... I know! Brainwave, I'll get the white shirt AND the blue shirt! GENIUS!! Reg. P.S. Keep yer 'air on Blakey! Last edited by Speedbird-1; 15 August 2009 at 10:24 PM.. Reason: spelling |
