uh oh (advice and prayers needed ha ha)

I think my GMT is headed to the RSC. I have my watches in a rotation. I typically wear this particular one once or twice per month so it really does get minimal wear. I took it out of the watch box on Friday afternoon and gave it a very gentle shake (always a thrill when these Rolexes just spring to life). I adjusted the time and gave it a few winds and then I felt a little pop.

Now, nothing. Time is standing still. I can still adjust the time, but the watch does not run. I'm not a watchmaker, but if I had to guess, my money would be on the mainspring.

The watch is a 116710, from 2008. I bought it around 2019 from Bobs. I'm going to send it to RSC in NY.

Am I missing anything?

FWIW, I know things happen. Machines break and life moves on. I'm sharing this info because there have been posts touting Rolexes as indestructable. I have been collecting for years, and this is my first repair. Sometimes, winding a watch can lead to a $1500.00 repair.

Oh it won't be that bad. Do you have a local independent?

You broke the mainspring and that would be replaced at service anyway. Don't sweat it.

Rik Dietel @ Timecare Inc.

He is the man and does exceptional work. Shouldn’t even be $1000 unless prices have gone up.

Also, bare in mind. Bobs may have sold you the watch and not done a service on it. These watches are not indestructible but they’re a lot tougher than most other automatics out there. My sub wasn’t serviced for 23 yrs give or take.

For movement work and no crazy parts an indepent is great. RSC will be fine too - might cost more though. Still I wouldn't worry.

Agree with RSC only. This is not a vintage watch.

I've had two Rolex mainsprings go on me. Different watches. It's an easy fix. My AD took care of both under warranty.

There’s a very common issue with these early movements on the 116710ln. I had it happen to me, sounds like the same thing. Was a very easy and cheap fix by an independent.

A service after 15 years will do it good. RSC only and 2 years warranty. Money well spent.

Agreed. I was sharing the news with my spouse and I was able to justify having a collection of notable watches. I felt rather smug, and all I got in return was an eye-roll LOL

So, until this gets sorted out, the rotation is down by one. Ho hum.

Agree with most: RSC Dallas, even if more expensive. You will have a warranty.

Dropped my watch off today at NYC RSC

It was a nice experience. Rode the elevator to the 7th floor, gave my license, filled out some paperwork, and met with an advisor to discuss the repair.

Something funny about the meeting, when I took the watch out she asked if I just had it serviced. I said no. She asked if I ever had it serviced, I said no. Then she said, "Do you ever wear this watch?" To an OCD'esqe watch collector, that's high praise.

So, here is the deal:
Full service, refinish, change the crown, tax and shipping: $1026.80 (USD)
Add-ons
Replace crystal: $143.94
Change ceramic insert on the bezel (all scratched up): $197.26 (USD)

The good news is that insurance will cover all of this (I do have a $250.00 deductible though).

All in all, will be good as new in about 2 months.

Nice to see you an OP who gives updates! Curious why insurance is paying?

I had a full service on my 116710ln which I purchased new in 2009. It got new gasgets, full service, light polish etc at a local watchmaker and was 632.00 so Rolex would probably be closer to 1K usd.

Jewelers Mutual, my policy covers breakage. Never had to exercise a policy before, so I was very skeptical about this. I called the claims phone number, told them what happened, and they were champions about it.

With them, you have a few options. You can go to one of their jewelers and they will pay them directly. OR You can go to Rolex for example and I pay first. I then send in the invoice and they reimburse me.

Glad it all worked out, OP. Curious though, I thought ceramic inserts are scratch-proof (or nearly scratch-proof).

Glad you asked.. yes, the ceramic part IS highly scratch resistant. The platinum parts on the bezel (the triangle where a lume blob should be (don't hate me) and the numbers) are very susceptible to scratching. And when they do get marked up, it's hard to see anything else.
