Advice on travel LA and Vegas and NYC

During the summer, hiding watches becomes difficult, so would it be wiser to leave them at home and opt for an Apple Watch instead?

Just cannot understand why some buy Rolex watches if they cause so must heart ache about wearing them if they travel anywhere today.

I have experience in all three cities (including living in NYC for decade+).

Realize things have changed a little over the past few years but if you stick to nicer areas I wouldn’t be concerned. More about being intelligent and aware.

You’re fine in NYC, just be aware of your surroundings. I wear my watches daily with no problems.

Vegas, no problems unless you’re inviting a rando back to your hotel

LA - haven’t been in a year, but I had no issues when I was out there.

Being aware matters but the nice areas have plenty of criminals around looking for comfortable prey.
Just pay attention and be smart.

My thoughts: if my watch isn’t safe, neither am I. It’s not like the only thieves in existence are out for a watch. I suspect folks with nice watches have other nice things that are targets too (esp for female counterparts who often have more “bait” such as handbags, rings, other jewelry etc).

If I buy it, I wear it. Insured of course no different than my homes/cars. Fwiw I’ve worn a gold RO to all the above cities.

I’d advise to travel smart. Be vigilant. And live your life.

Yes but as I said, intelligent and aware.

The comment re: nice areas is a baseline consideration. If you choose to wear a $30k watch in some areas (eg areas with high rates of violent crime) even being intelligent and aware may not do you much good.

The Apple Ultra is a great travel watch.
Sapphire crystal, long battery life, ruggedized innards, improved water resistance.

But I would suggest one Rolex for evenings.

By “hiding”, I believe you meant “hiding under a sleeve”? If so, simply wear a long sleeved Columbia PFG. It is safer for your sun exposure and does a nice job

I really think you should be fine. Just stop and take a look at the number of Rolexes at any airport, none of these people are the slightest concerned about their watch.

I spoke to a guy at ORD heading back to the city (Chicago) and he was taking the train to his apartment wearing a SD. As a consultant he probably makes that trip 4x a month.

No problems.
If you aren’t putting yourself into obvious danger situations ( no hookers in your hotel room, don’t leave your cocktail unattended etc) you will be just fine.

Your Roles

X will often be the cheapest watch being worn in many places in those cities.

Those cities are in the US, not 3rd world countries.

Just like any other city in the US, don't wear your watch like a douche and you will be fine.

I live in LA, wear my Rolex daily. There is no place in the city that I would be willing to go, but yet leave my watch home. There are places I just won't go, but those are the same places where tourists don't go either.

Same goes for Vegas and NYC.

Something a person could consider if they are afraid to wear nice watches is to wear a watch that isn't a "big name".

Rolex is the most recognizable watch in the world probably and perhaps thieves would know Patek and maybe AP as well.

So wear something less known. You could probably wear a 150,000 dollar Voitilainen and nobody would give it a second glance.

Personally I wear all my watches wherever I go.

I just don't travel with more than one or two, and I don't hardly ever invite hookers back to the room, no matter how enthralled they seem with me at the bar. Besides my wife wouldn't appreciate it.

Walking the strip after lunch, no worries.

Walking the back alleys wandering away from Fremont at 2:10am, much worries.

Just don't put yourself in a bad spot and enjoy yourself.

I wore a Rolex Explorer II in Vegas and didn't have problems. It certainly wasn't the fanciest watch on the Strip and I don't venture to questionable areas.

I was in NYC last month wearing steel Cartier Santos and had no problems. Again, it wasn't the most expensive watch in the area and I didn't go anywhere questionable.

LA and Vegas are relatively safe (nowhere is 100% safe obviously, but I have worn my Rolex in both places multiple times). In fact I just posted a bunch of pictures from my Vegas trip in another thread here in the open discussion forum if you want to check it out.

I can’t speak for NYC but I can tell you that JFK International is the first place I’ve ever seen a frosted WG Royal Oak in person. Also saw two Aquanauts, a ton of submariners and struck up a conversation with a guy wearing a YG YM2. Obviously they came from somewhere in NYC or were coming into the city (unless just connecting) but that many stellar expensive pieces in one location (coupled with how hard it is to get allocated a Rolex in NYC) makes me think it must be pretty safe for the most part.

Safe travels! And when in doubt, just wear a beater if it’s gonna give you stress. I know I can wear my Rolex to Mexico and probably be safe but since it gives me concern I wear a Luminox and don’t give it a second thought. It’s not worth stressing you out on a fun trip, but like when I go to Vegas one of the things I look forward to is putting on my Rolex and hitting the strip. Reminds me why I work so hard for the money in the first place.

Can’t speak on NYC or LA but have been to Vegas a few times and like others have said, it’s very safe, especially in the strip or on Fremont Street. Other than that, probably like anywhere, don’t drink what you can’t handle and don’t fool around with random women and your watch will be fine. Rolex is a cheap watch relative to Vegas goers.

If somebody is going to mug you in one of those places, which is much rarer than the news would have you believe, a showy Apple watch will mean as much to the thug as a nice watch would.

You should always be aware of where you are in any big city.

4 of us wore Rolex watches to vegas last year and no one have it a second thought.

Back to vegas in September and probably taking my AP this time. As AP have their replacement programme, feels even safer to take it.

The only issue I see in Vegas is if you allow yourself to get stupid on free drinks. That really applies anywhere, but I've had more people comment on watches I've worn there than any other city, and some of them didn't strike me as "enthusiasts".

Just be smart & aware of your surroundings and you're unlikely to have issues.

I've lived in LA for 8 years now, you will be fine, go into any restaurant or nice part of town and you will see a wide array of AP, PP, RM etc. Certainly be more aware of your surroundings depending on where you are, especially in DTLA.

I lived & worked in & around NYC for 45 years. Unless you are completely oblivious to your own safety there is very little chance that anything will happen to you. Go ahead and check crime statistics, NYC still has one of the lowest property crime rates in the US. I wouldn't get drunk and fall asleep on the subway overnight, but you are pretty safe if you can manage to avoid stupidities.
