Broken Crystal

My father in law dropped his gold DD the other day and shattered the crystal. I believe the watch is from the late 70s or early to mid 80s. He's considering using his rider from his home owners insurance to pay for it but something tells me that the crystal replacement/labor on this may not be enough to justify using that policy. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

I'll try to get it from him to take some pictures later.

I would send into a RSC and get an estimate and then make the decision, but I wouldn't use a rider for a crystal replacement.

If the crystal shaddered then RSC will reccommend a full service to make sure there are no shards in the movement.

That's right.. A new crystal is only 150 bucks, but it will cost another 600 to have the movement completely disassembled and cleaned of any possible broken pieces..

I shattered my crystal and took it in to my AD, they watched the watch for a week or so to make sure no damage to the movement and replaced the crystal. The crystal was about $160. I haven't had any trouble since, but they told me if any glass got in the movement it would have to go off to RSC.

Its not worth having your insurance to be raised because of this.

Be sure to hack it (pull the crown out so that the movement does function). If there is shards of crystal bouncing around either the watch face, or inside, there will be damage...

Any Rolex with a shattered sapphire crystal should be serviced. The shards from a broken sapphire crystal are so small and sharp they can really do some damage. They fall through the calendar window and into the movement.There hasn't been a shattered crystal that I have taken apart and found pieces under the dial. So word to the wise have it serviced one chip in a gear and it's done. Rik the watchmaker

Broke mine in 07, cost 800 to get full service. There was no doubt that it got down in the movement as it had so much sapphire dust in the date window.

Just another reason to hate Sapphire crystals

If it was under warranty RSC would do it all for the price of the crystal.

Had my GMT ll c crystal shatter and they took it apart and polished it all for $130.00.

If out of warranty it is prob a costly proposition.

This happened to my Omega Speedmaster a month or two ago, and it required a total service. New hands, dial, crystal and a complete service. Hope it turns out ok!

My sister in law dropped a SS two month old no date model she purchased in Sept 2008. The crystal shattered. She took it to Mayors (where she purchased it) and they sent it to Rolex. Cost her close to 800.00. They did not warranty a thing and even told her the hands were scratched and she needed new hands. Cost her close to 800 big ones!
