1969 Rolex 1680 Red Submariner, Mark V Dial on a Jubilee

This has been on my someday list for many years and have seen the prices rise. Birth year mattered to me so was not interested in an adjacent year. Decided to use the caseback date versus the serial number. Was able to source this one from Tropical Watch. Came on a 1990's oyster bracelet. I live in South Florida so was able to find a period-appropriate welded jubilee from Roliworks as the welded versions stopped production around 1971. Liked the idea of moving back to a bracelet that "could" have been worn on the watch when purchased. Also came with a TrueDome Superdome crystal and I do prefer the no cyclops look. The date is very readable.

All of this is of course subjective and I saved quite a bit forgoing one with box and papers. It did come with a cyclops crystal. For me, this watch is definitely a joy and a good blend of what makes watches such a great hobby. This one won't see the swimming pool or shooting range, and will be cared for more than it needs as I will want to pass down and let a daughter and grandchild enjoy the design, aged lume and history as much as I do.

Congratulations on the watch….while I love the uniqueness of my top hat crystal on my 1680, yours looks particularly sharp with the dome…and a birth year watch too….I am jealous!!! Wear it well every day!!!

Cool and congrats but isn’t ‘69 a bit early for a mk5 dial?

Not unheard of. Mk V is pushing it, I’d venture.
Here’s a Mk IV

’Excellent and very clean newer Mark 4 red Submariner dial with warm creamy lume plots and hands.’

I’ve always assumed 1969 is MF territory..

The OP watch is Mk5. The crosshatches on the f and t are aligned.

The question is not the authenticity of the dial but how appropriate it is in a 1969 case. Perhaps the OP could supply some serial number info?

Sorry, I got confused because another watch was posted to the thread. The serial would help. I went down the rabbit hole on serial numbers for early Mk4 dials, but have not really researched Mk5.

Congrats! I love a Sub on a Jubilee.

But all that trouble to get a correct bracelet, then it has an incorrect non-cyclops crystal... personally I'd be having that changed quick smart, but each to his own. Wear it in good health!

Serial # 225XXXX, so case dates to 1970. Caseback is marked II 69.

Why isn't the Jubilee bracelet a correct option for the 1680? Check the Rolex Master Catalog for the USA. It was available for the 1680.

Yes, the Jubilee is correct, as you say, and very nice . I sometimes wear my 1680 Red on a Jubilee.

I was saying it would not have come from the factory with a non-cyclops crystal.

Beautiful watch - congratulations! I have the superdome plexi on my 1680 and really enjoy its stealth Sea Dweller-esque presence. I also love the top hat and may get one of those back on mine at the next service interval at least 5 years in the future.

Enjoy and wear the heck out of your birth year red Sub!

The book lists the following Sub 1680 options - a strap, the USA Jubilee and 9315 option.

All are priced different.

Great info.
I was just telling a friend that the Submariner never had an option for the Jubilee.

I wonder if it’s a early 71 or late 70.

So, I assume the strap option would be a tropic? Anyone know what jubilee end links are recommended for the 1680 case?
