GMT “Sprite”: Causing similar reactions as the Hulk (before discontinuation)

Curious to hear from folks that were here before the Hulk was discontinued. Seems that before it was discontinued, it was extremely divisive, similar to the way the VTNR was. But now the Hulk is loved by the Rolex community, perhaps second only to the Pepsi.

Curious as to if the VTNR will also evolve this way post discontinuation (appears to be a high chance it will). Would love thoughts.

I don't recall the "Hulk" ever being divisive.

It is a visually stunning watch.

Hulk has always had a faction of people that never liked it. It is a lot of green from some. I think its popularity grew when it became discontinued. I think people don't like that the VTNR made for lefties. Others may like it.

I'm a big fan of Rolex green. But I was never a hulk fan. If presented the chance at retail I know I would buy it but I'll have to really think hard about it. Because of the sunburst dial and the color inconsistency between the dial and bezel. Those are really a hard turn off for me. I do own VTNR. I wear it on my left wrist I prefer the crown on left side as it doesn't dig into my wrist I have way more range of motions. If I have a choice I wish all my watches have crown on left side.

I can remember when hulks sat in the case. They’ve never been that cool, just hyped.

The Hulk had nothing on the original green Submariner anniversary 16610LV model which is what most serious collectors choose.

Personally, I believe the left handed green GMT will do well with collectors eventually.

I remember indifference towards the Hulk, not divisiveness. I couldn’t afford one and remain enamored. My feelings for the GMT Sprite however are not as fond.

The LV has been an easy pick up before the hype. The GMT is very difficult to get

Same here, and I love the fact that it is a different. Whilst I already got some hate / jealousy because of the "lefty" aspect of it, it was really a drop in an ocean of compliments.

I don't think everyone now in the Rolex community loves the Hulk. I don't, for instance. Granted, I gradually changed my mind about the green since the introduction of the original LV and ended up buying one, but I think the Hulk is just too much flashy green. (not like the mint green dials, which I love).

The VTNR is a beautiful watch and certainly a niche, and if this is the first and only time Rolex attempts something like that, it will become very desirable in the future. Like everything else, humans tend to either love or hate changes that cause a big ripple. Then, with time, it becomes the new norm.

Sprite reminds me of Quasimodo. That's it, and there's nothing I can do about it. Will it be as iconic as the Hulk? I don't think so. People will remember him for being different, and that's all.

Have to agree. I have owned a Hulk for over 12 years and still wear it weekly (despite owning over 20 watches).

Not a fan of the Sprite at all. The date window on the left just looks wrong. - even if I was to be offered one at retail, it is not a watch I would ever want to buy.

Fair point. But my two cents: A LHD watch (something that Rolex rarely does) + Rolex Green + GMT Master II? Any one of those 3 is incredible but combining all 3?

And then if you layer in the common wisdom that anything Rolex that's been undesirable is usually reversed to being desirable in the long run, I think the Spirit will be highly highly collectable. But, as mentioned, just another person's opinion

I don’t think people don’t like the VTNR because it’s made for left handers. It’s more to do with the date window being at 9, which to many is all kinds of wrong, me included.

If Rolex simply flipped the case, dial and the date window, I think it wouldn’t been a bonafide hit and up there with the Pepsi. The green and black bezel is stunning, I personally just can’t get passed the date at 9.

It's more niche than the Sub because of the LHD.
You never know but I don't think it will get nearly the love that the LV gets.
I like the VTNR and would expect it to be around a while. It just came out.

Loved the Hulk!

My biggest mistake was not grabbing one when they were at 7k

This thing is nuts, not sure what the fuss is about. I had the hulk a few times and frankly wasn’t for me.

The first time I saw one was at an open house at my AD and I thought it was spectacular. I'm not that big on green, but I have to give credit is due.

I love my VTNR - couldn’t care less whether it’s hated, loved, discontinued or the arse drops out of the market for it .. I bought it simply because I love the watch itself, why ? Colour scheme , says to me Rolex due to the green/black combo .. GMT, perfect for me as I travel a lot, comfortable - wear mine on the left wrist because that’s where I want it, I don’t need to run a poll to tell me which wrist I should be wearing my watch on …
The Hulk I find stunning too, sunburst dial and a real pop of green, I really hope they bring it back, either TT or solid gold would look stunning at 41mm with a few tweaks …
It’s not rocket science, like, buy, enjoy !

the VTNR is really growing on me... to be honest it is difficult for me to decide which I prefer between the VTNR, PEPSI and BLNR... all 3 look stunning.
Also the crown and date on the left hand side is not a bad thing for a righty either... I always take my watch off to operate the crown anyway...
I am just getting my first Rolex no, so not in a hurry, but I think my next one will be a GMT...

I do find it very awkward to set the time that’s the truth of it .. I’ll be honest too and say numerous times I’ve actually worn it the wrong way round ..
Glad watches isn’t a serious subject …

The "it's going to be discontinued" talk is thrown at certain Rolexes and tbh Its all guesswork usually with the hope of hyping certain models...

They were quite unpopular until the hype started.

Never been a fan. The beautiful green dial makes the bezel look like cheap plastic in comparison to my eyes.

I'd say there was an element of divisiveness at one time.

Not sure it will ever be loved by the masses, but I think it will be a boomer in terms of future value. It’s also a cool talking point watch, which I like.

Love the VTNR, the dial on the hulk is not pleasing to me.
