DJ with smooth bezel and oyster--too plain?
Hi all, I am on a rush to buy and gift a 36mm datejust, and the only viable option seems to be a silver dial, smooth bezel, and oyster bracelet.
The person I am gifting this for isn't the flashiest person, but I feel like the elegant but simple case design w/o the fluted bezel and the rather generic looking Oyster bracelet (I prefer the all-brushed look on the Explorer or the OP) makes it seem...not *as* special as the full bling jubilee-and-fluted bezel Datejust. Did anyone have the same qualms before they picked up their piece, and did that perception change? |

Nice, but pretty plain IMO. Conversely, I think the fluted/Jubilee is too much for a daily wear watch, and there's also no requirement to have a fluted bezel to be a formal dress watch.
Therefore my vote is see if you can get a smooth bezel/Jubilee combo. Jubilee dresses it up while smooth bezel dresses it down, making it perfect for any occasion without being either too formal or too casual/basic. |

Only question for me would be what is the age of the recipient because it is very difficult to read the time on silver dials for a lot of people with older eyes. Smooth bezel and oyster are a great combo though.

Look at it as an OP with date. I think it's cool if it fits the style of the person

the oyster pairs well with the rounded bezel. but it all depends the person who will be wearing it.
man or woman? heavy or slim built? more dressy or sporty person? |

It’s hard to imagine anyone not liking it. It’s a Rolex! That silver dial pictured, with the gold accents, is beautiful! I have the OP in the same color, and it’s stunning IRL. Kat Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Do you have a picture of your watch? The one I posted is Sundust. I'm curious regarding the difference. Thanks!

I am contemplating a DJ36, yellow gold two tone, jubilee bracelet with Wimbledon dial and Roman numerals. I saw it once, really nice, but legibility is a bit questionable. I am still struggling if I should go straight to plain silver or white, or dive in Wimbledon

Don't even think twice, the smooth bezel oyster DJ36 on a silver dial is one of the most beautiful Rolex references and a perfect every-day piece. This combination in particular is so versatile. Goes with everything, honestly. If you can get it, definitely pick it up and don't look back. Will be an awesome gift, I can say so from experience!!

Smooth bezel and Oyster is a great combo. Very sporty compared to Jubilee and Fluted (which is also a great combo) Or mix and match. Not really a wrong answer here....

Jubilee and smooth also works. Although I've had them, I'm just not team fluted anymore.

Perfect configuration for me. Mine is a little flashier in TT with MOP dial.

Silver, smooth, with oyster bracelet is a winning combo, in my opinion. I think that might be one of the only dials I like with a smooth bezel.

Smooth with jubilee is the most versatile. Also the nicest looking in my opinion.
The smooth with oyster in silver is pretty plain - not my taste but certainly not unattractive either… |

Go for it! It’s a stunning piece and will be such a great daily. For everyday wear, I probably wouldn’t want a fluted/Jubilee (I own one and it’s mighty flashy). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Agree. Try the smooth bezel and jubilee. Got my dad one but he never wore it he has other heavy hitter watches though. Just changed his dial to the blue one and he loves it. Blue is less versatile than silver but way more stunning |

I don't care for the smooth DJ, it should be fluted.
OP on the other hand looks great, see Kat's pictures for example |

Here is another of mine. This is smooth bezel. Smooth bezel does work really well.

I don't like the smooth bezel in general
BUT Its not my money or my watch so I suggest you buy what you like not what others tell you to like...

I too was concerned with that config being too plain. But was concerned jubilee was too flashy. I went oyster/fluted. It’s a great combo. Most versatile w a little bling. See my post for photo.

I don't actively hate the fluted bezel or the Jubilee, but I passed on them because they just reflect WAY too much light. And the fact that the fluted bezel is also polished doesn't help matters.

Everyone’s different.
To me, nothing says Rolex DJ, more than the flutted bezel and a jubilee bracelet. Ideally in two tone. |
