If you were alone on a deserted island…
Would you still wear a Rolex? Or would you be wearing a G-Shock? Or something different? Suppose you had to live off the land for at least a year or two.

Why would you even need a watch?

To play along, assuming there is a beach and sun on this island and no jerks who will try to mug me. Then, I would go with my Sub.

I guess my question should be more like “if you were living in isolation from the world”. I wanted to see how practical or functional people see their Rolexes or at the end of the day it’s just a fashion/statement piece. We already know there’s no real need for watches in modern life with clocks and phones everywhere, but if nobody was around to go ooh and aah at your watch would you even bother wearing a Rolex?

GMT… Hopefully have some idea of what time zone I’m in, and where my loved ones are. WR is more than enough, and tracking the date would be unbelievably helpful. Also, I’d be worried about when the battery on my g-shock would run out :)

Any Casio G-Shock with Tough Solar and Multiband 6 features. If the island was covered by one of the six atomic clock radio transmitters, it would survive longer than me and always tell the exact time. Maybe a Rangeman GW9400 as that would also tell me sunrise/sunset times, altitude, temp, coming weather changes and compass direction with no internet required. Plus 200m WR, multiple world time settings, five alarms and can bang it against rocks or whatever with no worries.

Yes - Submariner Date.
Mechanical so no worries about battery. Keep track of the date. Waterproof so no worries when swimming to catch my dinner. Bezel function would come in handy a lot as a timer. |

I've got 2 G-Shocks, both recent acquisitions, and my only problem with them is they are super hard to see/read. The light isn't nearly bright enough.

Any GMT or Sub would be ideal. Timing bezel can be used for so many things beyond its initial design. You could keep track of 24 hour time and date which is useful for calculating tides. Durability wouldn’t be an issue either. In the end, an interesting tool that could help your mental health by keeping you occupied and your spirits up might be the most valuable.

Most G-Shocks are solar powered now, so the battery concern is a moot point. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I want the G-Shock but on the other hand I’d like to buy my way out of this island (if stranded)

I can appreciate the discussion though. If I had to pick one, I would go with mechanical I guess. |

My Submariner would be fine.
And the TRF forum of course. Nobody said the island cannot have internet. Darn it, now I need my phone and some sort of solar charger. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I’d want a watch, but then again, you’re talking to someone that can’t travel without staying at a 5 star hotel. I’d want a fresh cup of coffee every morning, a hot shower, and air conditioning, too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I’d wear an Apple Watch on my right wrist so I can call in for a rescue and a GMT Master ii on my left so I know what time it is at home to plan my rescue celebration

I'd wear my Bluesy the slightest hint of sunlight reflects off the crystal and drives my Golden Retriever nuts so hopefully would be able to use it to signal passing aircraft or ships etc.

Something ultra-lightweight, probably a solar gshock or a solar quartz watch in titanium.
