Update: GMT IIc 3D rendering

Just have the clasp left to do. Applied a focal effect for a macro look...

As someone whose done his fair share of 3D modeling, I'd have to say this is VERY nice overall. My only nit would be the reflectance of the brushed metal. That's the ONLY thing giving it away. Beautiful work!

Looks good. What software are you using?
I began constructing a 16710 GMT assembly on SolidWorks but sadly, work got in the way and I never finished. I wonder if I still have the files...

The links look a little too flat, but I'm just splitting hairs. Very nice.

Thanks for the feedback!

I used 3ds Max. I didn't use global illumination renderers like mental ray or v-ray, so the brushed metal reflection isn't fully convincing.

The watch is actually a demo I prepared for a project I'm assigning to my students (building a watch).

Ed,

Once you finish the clasp you will have accomplished the hardest part... the outside. The inner working should be a snap - just plates, gears and miscellaneous mechanical parts... things that are very simple in 3D modeling. Just imagine how cool it would be to do an exploded view!

That's what I used to really get immersed in, the details. When I did the Wright Flyer the engine was detailed down to the safety wire on the connecting rod cap bolts. Doing a watch mechanism would be immensely rewarding.

I'd love to "do" a movement as well, I use Bentley MicroStation as my 3D tool and work as a Structural Designer in the Drilling side of the Oil business, I am fascinated by all things mechanical and you are right, an exploded view of a movement would be brilliant, as you also say, doing mechanical parts would be a lot more straight forward than the curves and surfaces of a case/bracelet/clasp.....

Fantastic work by the way....both of you

Very nice Ed. I don't even know where you start with a project like that. Keep us up to date on your progress.

Sub Date?

Would love a 3D Sub Date rendering for a desk top hot fiber :-)

Nice XMAS prezzie for your forum buddies. Hint Hint.

Man, I used to produce some cool web content, but with my new Rolex obsession, this rendering does me a treat.

Does the magnifier magnify the date?

It does! I had to watch the "bubble" factor so it doesn't over magnify. It calculates the refraction based on the geometry's volume.
