First time someone noticed my Rolex

Hello all. I’ve had my sub on every day for the 2 or 3 months I’ve had it, and someone noticed it for the first time this weekend. And it was not exactly a compliment. I had a client out in the river and he said “hey man, is that a Rolex”? Well it was a first for me and caught me kind of off guard and I just said “yes sir it is”. I was expecting something along the lines of “ nice watch” or some such, instead he said “you’ve lost your mind wearing a watch like that out here fishing on the river banging around in a metal boat, throwing a cast net for bait, etc, etc”. Now that’s funny! I just left it at, uh ok!

I mean, he has a valid point, honestly.

I know they are tool watches and all, yadda yadda yadda. But realistically, it is more logical (especially for those that don't really care about watches / feel the emotional attachment) to wear a cheaper watch when you can ding it up. Not saying that's what I do, but I understand his sentiment.

Cowboy boots were initially made for cowboys, but I don't wear my expensive exotic skin boots out in dirty / muddy places or wear they could get scratches.

Not a good analogy IMO. Sounds like you went fragile with your boot leather. A Sub’s materials are more or less hard wearing(SS/Ceramic) much like going with stingray or elephant. They are very pricey compared to bovine/goat, but damn tough. My boots will scratch furniture and are on their 2nd soles.

I plan on wearing mine everyday especially fishing.

Its a watch, its meant to be worn...
If you were wearing a Patek on a strap that would be one thing but it's a dive watch.
If you are going to worry about it getting a ding or scratch sell it and buy a GShock....

Wow... a client spoke to you like that? What a disrespectful thing to say. I'd dump his ass immediately... Sounds to me like the kind to jerk you around and probably isn't worth your time.

Ha piratfisk, it's not my cheapest rolex, it's my only rolex. But I bought it to wear, so I wear it. Funny thing though, when I bought it I told myself that this would be my only rolex. Now I'm kinda sorta thinking about an Explorer I. Ya'll have corrupted me!

That is a good story.
I was in the liquor store the other day with a Sub on, and the guy at the till said ‘you can pay with your watch…but I’d owe you a lot of change’. We had a good laugh. He definitely appreciated the watch.

All of these incidents are creepy. I prefer when no one notices my watches.

The only exception is when the other person is wearing a Rolex or similar watch.

Its your watch and you can wear it as you like.

Its not a nice comment or in anyway valid.

If you're a guide and that was your client, then I'm guessing he was just trying to share his own opinion of how he would treat a Rolex.

I might say this if you are a guide on the water very often - get a NATO for your sub if you fish often on the river.

It's a "work" strap that won't fail you if a springbar should.

I’ve got an old Tag and an Omega that a small number of people have said “nice Rolex” when I wore them.

Not once has anyone commented on my actual Rolex…

The most compliments I’ve had by far saying “nice watch” etc are on my g-shock - GM2100.

They're made to be worn. Too many people baby their watches.

Well quite a bit of that is true especially reading many of the posts lately on forum, most Rolex watches today in general get a very pampered life .I sometimes wonder why some buy one of the toughest mechanical watches made today. Glad your using and wearing yours in normal daily activities even when you are fishing.
