Debating engraved rehaut on 5-digit references

What are your thoughts on the last of the 5-digit models that were made with the engraved rehaut? Part of me thinks they're interesting as "last of the breed" and "transitional" pieces.

But another part of me thinks the engraved ROLEXROLEXROLEXROLEX should live only on newer 6-digit models, an example of more blingy modern Rolex (see: solid gold Deepsea); that it clashes with the more "tool" aspect of 5-digit sports models.

Do you think that no "true" 5-digit model should have engraved rehaut? Can you even see the engraved text? Does it just not matter? Will they have higher value 20 years from now?

Would doubt if any Rolex would become more valuable just because of the Rolex branding on the rehaute.

I like the engraved rehaut but not to the point where it dictates a purchase.

With the exception of my 16570 all of my Rolex watches have engraved rehaut. No difference what so ever. I went no rehaut and 3185 mostly due to availability, and I wanted unpolished at a price point I was comfortable with.

The engraved with 3186 goes for a premium that I personally do not value.

It doesn’t really bother me nor do I care on a 5 digit.

I do not believe it takes away any tool watch aspect of it. I believe the proportions, and aluminum bezel inserts, and bracelets/clasp is more of what makes it a tool watch.

Anything below the crystal was always aesthetic so I dont believe it really matters either way.

I don’t understand the point of your thread. The engraved rehauts were on the 5 digit Subs from sometime in 2004, until the end of production, in 2010, so for over 5 years. To say no 5 digit Sub should have the engraving is pointless, because many of them do. There is nothing to debate. Why would you let something that you can’t change bother you? If you want a 5 digit Sub without the engraved rehaut, buy one manufactured prior to 2004. Easy fix.

Surely not having the engraving symbolises 5 digit .. and why people prefer older models, over say new 6 digit references ..
Like putting a ceramic bezel in an OG Kermit …

I personally think the window from 2000-2003 (where most 5-digits had SEL and holes) was the pinnacle of the tool watch era of Rolex. If you want a tool watch, that's my personal preference window. If you want a more modern look - you can shop post 2003 and at that point, I don't think the engraved rehaut really makes a difference.

I recently picked up a 16570 (second time….I foolishly traded my first 15 years ago). This one is to keep, and I specifically wanted the 3186 movement….so I have the engraved rehaut.

IMHO it just adds a tiny something to an already fabulous watch, even if I occasionally have to squint to see it!

I agree with you. I had a 2010 16610, with SELs, engraved rehaut, and no drilled lug holes. I loved that watch! It remains my favorite black dial Submariner.

I like the engraved RRR Rehault as it’s a bit of the last innovation on the 5 digits.
I also wanted a 3186 on my 16570 and it was coming with RRR

With watches, it all comes down to preference. Value of watches can be mercurial - one day no rehaut engraving is more collectible, the next week engraved rehaut is more collectable.

I’m a “less is more” guy for certain models and therefore appreciate the no engraved rehaut on 4 and early-mid 5 digit subs.

Only thing about lughole models is, from what I've read, they cannot work with jubilee bracelets? Or is it that they're noncompatible with the super jubilee bracelets?

Presence of absence of RRR rehaut has never been of any concern to me - 5 digit or otherwise.

I love the RRR Renault’s and have a few. My favorite era for Rolex is late 2000’s, Z, V, M and G series.

My 2 cents:personal preference. When I was was looking for a an 11 series exp1 I wanted it to have an engraved rehaut. But after purchasing a 2008 model with the engraving, I simply never notice it. So, knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t care either way.

I personal like the rehaut and also feel it's one of the better ways to authenticate without opening the watch, have never seen an engraved rehaut done correctly on a fake before.

I recently acquired a 16610LV and only wanted the engraved rehaut, which took a little more time to find the right one but I got there!
