Looking for opinions, Re: GMTII

Hey Everyone,

So earlier this summer, I finally got the watch I've been lusting after for the last 2 years (the GMTIIC). This replaced my GMTII, which I swore I'd always love... until I put on the IIc that is :)

Anyway, to be perfectly honest, I'm not a watch collector. Just a guy who appreciates a good watch. I haven't put the GMTII on my wrist in months, and can't see why I would anytime soon.

My question is, should I just sell the GMTII? It's just sitting there.. doing nothing. My next question would be - what's it worth? The bracelet is scratched from normal wear, and sadly, I knicked the bezel and case a bit switching out the black bezel for a Pepsi bezel (both of which I still own). Nothing a servicing couldn't take care of to make the watch look brand new.

Anyway. If I was to sell it, what should I sell it for? Or, should I keep it - will it grow in value someday, or continue to drop, as it has for the past couple of years.

Thanks for the opinions everyone - much appreciated!

I'd keep it definitely unless you really have to sell it, but that's just my opinion.

I never considered myself as a "collector" it just seems to be happening, I have never sold a watch, they will all go to my boys eventually. I would say this, put the GMT away somewhere safe, in a year or two get it out and put it on, I will bet a load of memories come flooding back, that's how I feel if I haven't worn one for a long time.

There are other threads around about the investment possibilities with Rolex watches, I don't treat mine as investments at all, but I am delighted if I find out I can get back my initial purchase price if I did decide to sell or if the sh1t really did hit the fan and I had to sell. Most Rolex watches will lose money to start with if bought brand new from an AD at full retail price, it's no surprise yours has dropped if it's relatively new, but give it another 5 years and I'll bet you can get your money back easily......JMHO's

I traded my 10 yr old 16700 GMT in on a V serial ceramic and got almost exactly what I paid for it.

I do not collect watches.

I wear watches.

And oddly enough only one at a time.

The decision is ultimately yours, however, I myself do not see the need to have more than one at a time.

Good luck.

I wear two Rolexes. I wear one on one day and the other on the next day. Sometimes I wear them a week at a time. I do like the change.

Have it serviced, wind it once a week and use it as a backup when you gotta send in the IIC for any reason. Have your cake and have one to eat as well...

If it was your FIRST Rolex, you may want to keep it and pass it down. I am keeping my GMT 16750 for that very reason. My daughter will inherit it. As for the GMTIIC, I got the gold/stainless version this year and also have a hard time taking it off! I wish you the best, you WILL be pleased down the road!

Very sage advice! If you don't collect, and there is nothing sentimental about the watch, then move it along and pocket the $, or better yet, put it in a 'watch fund' for the next time you want to trade to a different watch.
