Watch Winders - Yes or No?

Hi guys,

Some of the watch connoisseurs on youtube said that they don't believe in watch winders. Does that mean it doesn't work or they prefer to hand-wind the watches if they stop?

I had my APs on watch winders and noticed some issues with running significantly fast. My Rolex is doing fine with the watch winder.

Please share your experience!

I have all of my watches on Wolf winders. No issues whatsoever.

it's a mechanical item with gears and springs that wear out with use. If you're wearing 2 or 3 regularly during the week then sure use a winder, but if you have several that will go unworn for weeks on end then let them rest.

Based on this, the answer is quite simple: you don't have to believe in watch winders. Use if you need them. For example this tool can therefore be extremely useful for complicated watches that take a long time to set up and you do not like this. Based on this these are not really useful for watches with a date or without a date, since setting these up takes less than a minute. It follows that in my opinion these devices are not really useful if you only have one or two automatic watches, which wind themselves up during their regular wear. But it never hurts to own one if it makes you feel happy, or you like to watch that your watch is rotating and not just standing.

This has been discussed at length for a number of years. I believe it’s clear that there is no support at all for the view that regular use of watch winders makes a watch require service more frequently than the recommended service interval. It is also the case that the stresses on a watch are infinitesimal compared to those in most rotating equipment – engines, motors, etc. Modern lubricants also last a very long time before migrating or degrading.

Personally, I only use a winder on watches with several complications because I’m probably a little too lazy to reset them each time I wear the watch.

I rotate between my two AP’s throughout the week, the one I’m not wearing goes on the winder. That way I don’t need to worry about setting them in the morning. No issues with the winders affecting timing!

I have a wolf but don’t use it .. never had from new .. I have no issue my watches run down, part of the fun winding them up and resetting time/dates ..

I have about 15 watches and only use two fingers to wind them. I set the time on one or three watches every day and enjoy every minute of it.

I use winders on my most worn automatic watches and the others are just boxed.

Lots of watches. No winders. Never saw the need. Takes very little time to set the one I want to wear.

It could be due to the position of the watch on the winder vs how it wears on the wrist. I’m by no means an expert of any kind but on the winder the watch is always vertical and on the wrist it is in many different and changing positions. I typically take a watch off the winder and look at my phone. Adjust if needed and go.

I have 2 watch winders (gift from Rolex boutique), I hardly use them. I enjoy using my 2 fingers to wind them before using them that day.

I use winders on watches where I find it irritating to set (Perpetual Calendar, certain moonphases), that's about it.

I prefer to let my watches “rest” while I don’t wear them so no winders. I don’t have any complicated watches such as calendars and such, maybe if I had one of those…
