Growing up in that early era, found most of the synth sound to be phony and annoying. Still not a big fan. But that said, can't imagine one of my favorite tracks without it.

As a source of sound it has equal legitimacy as the sound Neanderthals made by striking two sticks together for a beat that they could use to dance around the cave's fire ring.

Thanks Blansky. Great read. Particularly love the photos of some classic synths. I don’t play keys, but appreciate their aesthetic beauty as well as their unique sounds.

For anyone interested, especially in the early ‘80s British stuff like Human League, Tubeway Army/Gary Numan, OMD, there’s a fantastic documentary on synths and ‘new pop’, called ‘Synth Brittania’. It’s on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/1lVljmH0yUw?feature=shared

We drove past this place a few times last month when we were in Asheville, N.C., for a wedding: https://www.moogmusic.com/visitmoog

I remember one of the guys in one of the many HS garage bands had a Moogerfooger. Made some silly noises IIRC.

In 1963 Delia Derbyshire created the iconic theme to Dr Who, some of the first electronic synthesized music ever recorded.
