Our Friend Dave.

I was just reminded that we lost Dave, about this time last year.
A really lovely bloke, that I'm sure is missed by us all on here.

Dave unfortunately succumbed to Prostate cancer, a bastard disease if ever there was one, that kills more men than almost anything.
More than 12,000 deaths during 2017-2019 in the UK alone.

I'm sure Dave would be happy for me to remind members to, get tested!

Exact same here. PSA and physical exam (as uncomfortable as it sounds) done yearly. My family has a history of prostate cancer so I take no chances.

Dave was such a positive presence here. I miss him as well.

Had my annual PSA. Returned to my urologist after a covid hiatus, but had my PSA tested every year. My father had prostate cancer at my age, so I am vigilant.

Dave was a nice guy on the forum. I did communicate with him on the board. RIP, kind sir!

Agreed, I miss Dave's posts. RIP. Glad we got flowers off to his family.

Why not take advantage through regular check-up testing for this and other maladies? It makes sense to me, anyway.

I also take no chances and do the same with regards to annual checks (PSA). I'll also urge anyone else to do the same based on their doctor's recommendations. Dave is certainty missed, but we'll all cherish the fond memories and much needed reminder he has ultimately left with us.

Oh, thanks. I remember him. Yes, came across as a very nice, regular Joe. I don't think I realized he passed.

So …….
My dad died of prostate cancer 21 years ago. When I turned 50 (8 years ago) - went to local GP for test & he said due to invasive check/ he did this 10 point questionnaire which every one was a No from me. He said based on my answers he wasn’t going to do the ‘check’

Been reading a bit on the PSA check. Anyone know if this is done on NHS if requested ? To be honest - wouldn’t even mind paying for it. Few people I’ve spoke to, can’t believe he just didn’t do the check as I was there although that the time I was a bit glad he didn’t

Two recommended podcasts interviewing a patient and the doctor pioneering new prostate cancer treatments that involve imaging as opposed to the barbaric biopsy. For awareness...

Had my yearly physical back in January. Always have an extremely low PSA level like around 0.30 so I always refused the digital exam. I know. Stupid.

This year remembering what this poor man went through and my doctor telling me that he’s had other patients with low psa’s who he felt some irregularities in there and had to go for biopsies and ended up having cancer.

So this year I bit the bullet and had the full prostrate exam. It was awful but the alternative is much worse.
He said everything was normal and my PSA is still ultra low thank the good lord.
It feels good that I had it done and it was clean.

May Dave rest in peace.

It lasts a few minutes at most. I think that an experienced urologist can detect irregularities that way. For those who are unaware, the PSA test can be included in a regular blood test panel. Ask for it! Not totally accurate, but good to see the trend. Get annual PSA tests!

It's funny, I came across a reply of his to one of my FB post memories today. Between that and this thread here it was nice to sit and remember him for a while. I enjoyed Dave. I hope he's at peace.

I miss my dear friend Dave, we had many, many conversations.
I used to raise my glass of bourbon to him Saturday night and then pray for him Sunday morning.
Save me a seat at the bar my friend, first round is on me.

Had a Prostate MRI yesterday in response to a rising PSA (3, 6, 8 over last 4 years)
24 hr Fast followed by a self-administered Enema prior to a half-hour MRI.
Next step probably a Biopsy. GP initially diagnosed an 'enlarged Prostate' about 10 years ago (at 62yrs) and has been monitoring the PSA. Now time for some more serious investigation to see if it's BPH or Prostate Cancer.

Over the past several years, my PSA steadily increased until in the summer of 2021 it hit 13.7. My urologist recommended an MRI, and it showed several suspicious lesions on my prostate. He said we could just keep an eye on it or perform a biopsy to know for sure whether it was cancer. To me, knowledge is power, so I chose to have the biopsy.

I had multiple lesions of moderately aggressive prostate cancer (Gleason Score: 3+4=7). Because it was aggressive, I decided on radiation treatments every weekday for three weeks in December, 2021 and January, 2022. I was given Eligard injections to shrink my prostate and three gold "seeds" were implanted at the three corners of the prostate gland so the radiation beam, which rotated 360 degrees around my pelvis, would sense the gold seeds and focus on the prostate without damaging the healthy tissue around it.

After the radiation, imagery revealed all the cancer was gone. For the next year, I had some nasty side effects requiring me to stay close to a toilet for sudden "urges" to go (both number 1 and number 2), but they gradually resolved and everything got back to normal. Today, my PSA is zero and my oncologist says there's a 95% chance the cancer won't reoccur.

My dad died from colon cancer at 67, and I have a colonoscopy every three years. They always find and remove two or three "pre-cancer" polyps,

I'm a healthy 82 year old now, and urge my male friends to watch their PSA and to get regular colonoscopies if they're over fifty.

Dave was a good guy, and I really enjoyed his posts. I miss them.

I’m not questioning what they did was right or wrong. Sounds like you made out real well. But wouldn’t it have been more prudent to just fully remove the thing?
Was it more risky to do it with the seeds or was the surgery much riskier?

My oncologist told me that if I had been 20 years younger, he'd have recommended surgery, but at my age radiation was less risky.
