Choosing watches

I turned 50 this year and decided to buy a Rolex to commemorate the big milestone. The problem is I found a beautiful watch for 12 and a stunning watch for 22. My dilemma isn't whether I can afford it or not, but rather, have I reached a point in life that I'm being stupid with money? I haven't worn a watch since I retired, about 8 years, so this isn't like it's something I need. Rather just something to show myself, and the world, I've done pretty well for myself. Although thr higher one is definitely a "eff all yall peasants" piece. Haha. But really, for those of you who understand where I'm coming from, how did you decide? Even the lower priced one is a watch most people will never own. I realize even buying one is a luxury.

Spending 12k for a watch is already kind of stupid. Might as well get the stunning one for 22k.

All kidding aside, what makes one stunning rather than beautiful? I'd settle that in my mind first. I've pulled the trigger and asked myself later "why did you do that?" and took quite a hit letting it go. At the same time, don't compromise for what you really want.

Some watches like Rolex hold value or even go up in value over time so you wouldn't be wasting your money. other watches not so much that's why it would be nice to know which watches your discussing then we can give you more information as to how those watches do over time.

It’s $22k and rolex makes millions of watches. There is no “eff you peasants” unless you live in a place with incredibly low gdp per capita.

A 50th comes once in a lifetime.
Treat yourself to the model you like the most. Stupid with money? No...

The 10k difference between the two is less than a $ per day for the next 30 years in which you will enjoy the memento of a life achievement on your wrist.

If your NW is North of $1MM, the more expensive one is but 2% of that...

Enjoy the experience ahead!

Rolex lady DJ, 18YG, diamond bezel and diamond dial markers on MOP dial. President band. 12k, no box/papers, 26mm

Rolex ladies pearlmaster, 18YG, box and papers 22k, 29mm, diamond bezel and diamond dial markers

The first is a timeless piece that is subtle when worn. The second is high polish gold and is a statement piece when worn. I do prefer the larger size of the 29mm, but as stated "I feel like an idiot spending that much on a watch but.. I'd wear it like a crown". it's definitely the highest priced piece of all my friends Rolex. So there's that. Lol

Go for it! I treated myself to a new GMT BLNR when I retired at 60. The cost wasn’t an issue and I never really care what watches other people wear or don’t wear. I just bought a watch I had an insatiable appetite for.

I just sold a Rolex for more than I bought if for in 2018. There is that possibility.

Even in Van I don't see that many heavy hitters. The supercars have disappeared too - not like 5 or 6 years ago. Chinese money is all gone

The Pearlmaster, frankly, has not been that popular in the used market which speaks to its desirability.

It is hard to judge the 26mm without price, authenticity of the diamond bezel and dial (there were a lot of non-factory mods), and importantly the bracelet stretch.

Huh. Rolex is super common here. Go to any restaurant downtown and thry are a dime a dozen. Nothing wrong with that, just that they aren’t some “fu” like theOP said lol

My honest personal opinion, lady watches under 30mm are too small and appear dated. In regards to your options, get the one you: a) truly love and b) would wear comfortably. Sounds like you heart wants the flash, but your style wouldn’t allow you to wear it comfortably so I would think a little longer since lady watches are very hard to resell.

I did an Everose YM on Oysterflex for my 50th a couple years back. Originally had been thinking OP Candy Pink. Loved the YM since it came out & now zero regrets on the money spent. So I say treat yourself and you’ll love it. Only downside is that purchase seemed to break the seal on what I would spend on a watch! Now I am in hunt of a FP and an AP.

When you're a kid: have no concept of money.

When you're thirty, be thrifty.

When you're fifty, have no concept of money.

If both watches were the exact same price, and you could only have one, which one would you choose?

For me, once I bought an Apple Watch my Rolex stayed in the safe.. until I just missed my Rolex and appreciating the beauty of it over just another digital thing. I still have my apple watch that I wear when I don't want to wear my Rolex to certain places though...

Go 29mm out of those, I am presuming they are pre owned due to the sizes. Have you looked at the Lady-Date Just from an AD, as they are 28mm and have several different configurations where you should be able to find one to your taste?

If you are comfortable with the money and it will bring you enjoyment every time you put it on, go for it. Forget what anyone else thinks.
And happy 50th!!
