Icon2 Cubitus Speculations

Patek's first new line of watches since 1999, the "Cubitus", is expected to be revealed at a private event in Munich on 10/17/2024.

so what can we expect/speculate?
  • tonneau case: a call to the past?
  • price: in a bloomberg interview with stern quote: "The design is done, and the prototype is ready…You should not only do a million-dollar watch…We have people who are passionate about watches and who can spend a maximum of $30,000 or $40,000 on a watch.”

look forward to your thoughts .

It’s also supposedly a dive watch/sports model. So a standard probably won’t be a leather strap.

The Tonneau cases are beautiful on the Pateks, would love to see that brought back in some capacity down the road.

Not sure I love the potential name, but a tonneau case and a sporty ethos would be very interesting.. RM has made the tonneau shaped case appealing

Wonder how it would slot against Aqua and Naut sport lines

I'm expecting it will be something RM-ish in terms of the shape and vibe. But I imagine it will be more Pateky. Not that strong of a take. I expect I will be disappointed.

Are there rumors of it being tonneau or is that a complete guess?

Can’t believe Patek managed to choose an even worse name for a new line than AP.
On the other side:Why should they waste marketing resources for the naming when Patek clients buy everything up?

What is the common name for cubitus?
Cubitus: 1. The elbow. 2. The forearm and hand.

Latin name for elbow.

Perhaps the rumours relate to the the notion (cube) that it might be square or rectangular and the other rumour that PP delayed releasing it due to the Watches and Wonders awe at the Cartier re-release of their original PCPC Tortue shaped watches?

I fear obtaining the new limited edition Cartiers (Also coming out in October) will be even harder than getting hold of PP’s!

@OP, very hard to tell with Patek, each time they launch novelties, people (and myself) seem to be wrong...

What I expect with more probability, as usual with true novelties (like the Nautilus in 1976, the Aquanaut and so on), is that a majority of people expressing on the forum will be to complain (Patek has lost its DNA, it's not classy, it's too big, etc... ). That's for sure :p

They have modernized the collections during the last 10+ years, not 100% success but rather good moves overall (to me). I'm curious to see what a new line-up will look like. If it's a more sporty ("casual" diver), it will certainly be a "first" and much different from what Patek has ever produced (except maybe the Pilot models). It might be bigger, thicker, less elegant (than a big 5980/5990 for instance), but I'm sure they have the potential to do great (especially for that kind of use). Will it aim at being an equivalent of RO Offshore?

As usual, it's not in the first days/weeks that we'll be able to judge.

Cubitus Hints in Patek Trademark/Patent Applications

The trademark application for the term “Cubitus” includes the word “chronograph.” That doesn’t necessarily mean it will be a chronograph, but it is interesting. And we don’t even know for sure that “Cubitus” is the new Patek Philippe at all–the trademark for “Celestial” was also registered not long ago. If we look at patents, there are two developments in particular that could possibly relate to this new Patek, Cubitus or otherwise.

Patek Philippe has developed a multi-stage heat treatment process for making and shaping extra-durable gold alloys. Perhaps a new Patek Philippe Cubitus will be made from such an alloy, or maybe it will feature a recently-patented multifaceted bezel with hour markers protruding inward from the rehaut. Building the hour markers into the bezel makes the dial manufacturing process much simpler.

At the price point, it'll need some very different aesthetics to avoid Calatrava and Ellipse cross-elastic demand methinks. Absent that, say goodbye to the entry level versions of those references.

Another Patek "sports" diver? Will it be a "real" one, which like at least 200M water resistance? Will it be another variation of the Aquanaut/Nautilus, or as the diagram above shows, a completely round cased "diver."

Whatever it is, I probably won't be able to get it even if I had to money to do so (and I might depending on the retail price they set).

Please no precious metal if it really is a utility type diver.

As for the tonneau shaped cases, love them. I've often wished for a Gondolo in a smaller case size. The current annual calendar version is gigantic, and I have no clue why they made it so large. But other than that, I think that watch is a stunner.

Regarding Patek making a true utilitarian sports watch. I would say not just to Patek, but to anybody or company at the top of their game, “Don’t forget what made you great.”

That does have a lot of cubes. Perhaps the name is very literal.

I do feel like lovers of the Patek of old (myself included) will be disappointed.
