Daytona question
The Daytona is a beautiful iconic watch, but how often to you really use its timing capabilities? Are there practical applications for a Daytona or is it just about the look? I am very interested in people’s opinions.
PS my Sea Dweller has never been below a depth of 60 feet.

My guess would be 90% or more of people who buy the Daytona is for the look and because it's an iconic piece not because they plan to use the functionality

It's more about design and proportion than utility imho. I would say I use a rotating bezel a lot more than a chronograph, especially when it's screwed down.

Nope. Very rarely do I use any timing functionality of the chronograph in any of my chronographs.
But they all look beautiful.

I play with mine sometimes. It's rare though.

Ive used it for fun to time laps for F1 races and for timing my kids getting homework done, and times getting my kids to clean up - that last bit with cleaning up literally takes forever....my watch had to be wound repeatedly for that and it's still going.
Now, get off my lawn... PDG |

Exactly.
Most sports model complications or capabilities are never needed or used….these are worn as jewelry in the large majority of cases. The GMT function would probably be the most used but even then…rarely needed in this day and age. |

Analog days are drawing to a close.
A Daytona is better for endurance events if you're timing a driver's stint, or the overall event for the purpose of predicting a final pit stop. The official timing system is of no use. You'd need to run an app on a PC to do this today. In sprint events it is useful in timing gaps if there is spotty cell data and no WiFi - but you'll need a notepad. The central sweep seconds hand is started when the target car passes a point on the track, then stopped when the driver you're supporting passes that same point. You can then radio the gap and whether it's closing or stretching. But at many tracks with cell data and/or WiFi, smartphone apps have access to the official timing system tracking car transponders. This beats a Daytona all to pieces. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I'd go as far as to say most don't even use it to tell time.
I have personally found the panda to be difficult to even read the time on when I tried one.. but I absolutely love the watch, it's pure beauty and class and no doubt iconic, and I'd wear it anyways. As far as the timing capabilities, I like to cook gourmet meals at home for my lovely wife, and I'd give it a whirl with using it as a cooking timer (as long as I didn't need absolute precision). |

I have always loved the “busy” dial of a chronograph for its aesthetics, bonus is that you can time things too. I have had many chronographs including four Daytonas. I use it occasionally to time something but usually it just tells time for me.

It’s a lot about aesthetics and history with this one.

I use the chrono hand as a seconds sweeping hand, it doesn’t look right to me it sitting still, so I start it to coincide with the very small seconds hand ..
And boy does a Daytona look good ..

Currently have 3 Daytonas, maybe used the chronograph function once…it’s not really about timing things ;)

My daughters like me timing them running lengths of the garden...
Money well spent! Jokes aside, when i pass it on to one of them I hope they will have fond memories. |

Mostly though I just like the look. |

Use it regularly for cooking and grilling, especially when I have multiple things going at once.

Until your wearing one, you don't realize how often you will use it. Like How long does it take to go to the store? or how long does it take for me to drive and pick up the kids? or how long did his Sermon last? etc. etc. Lots of fun time.

Honestly, never, personally. I only wear mine occasionally, and as I keep the pushers screwed in I almost always find it’s habitual and easier to use my phone. But I envy those that do.

Grilling, timing work activities, using it a sweep seconds hand. Once you get used to the minute hand relative position of the 30 minute register, quite easy to use.

Its all look like my other Rolex watches. Its not like I ever get wetter than a pool but I love Submariners. Never timed a thing with a Daytona.

Same, I sync it with the small seconds hand and I enjoy watching it sweep around.
