Would you not buy a Patek if Extracts only ?

Curious on your thoughts as I am considering buying pre-owned, is it much harder to resell the watch if it comes with extract of archives instead of original certificate ?

I prefer the complete set, but extract papers are acceptable to me. I guess it would depend on how much I wanted that particular watch.

Original papers are far more desirable but an extract is nice to have if not an option.

If you plan on enjoying / wearing it for the rest of your life, perhaps handing it down as an old tradition, then it should not matter as long as the timepiece is authentic.

Talking about price, I noticed watches with extracts can have a significant discount..

As long as I know the year it was sold and the original configuration on the extracts (also a way to know it's not stolen), I guess it would work for me !

I only buy models with box and papers, which limits me especially on older models from the 80s and 90s, but I think if the watch is complete, the owner, most likely took great care of the watch and provenance is not an issue. Anyone can order an Extract, and a naked watch may have been opened a lot, worked on by anyone and passed through a lot hands.

Exactly how I tend to look at it.

Now I understand it’s not as important to some, but I do feel that it is an indication of how well the owner and previous owners took care of the timepiece. Again at this price point I think it’s really important to establish provenance.

Fullsets only for me. It’s the very first step when whittling down options.

For me it depends on how old the watch is. If it’s recent, I see the lack of original papers as a red flag. But if it’s older, then an extract is fine because there’s been more time for there to be an innocent explanation for why the original papers aren’t available anymore.

Not a problem as long as its priced right. You should pay 5-10% less if no original papers. So I'd only do if u want to save. Plenty of watches out there to find the price and condition you want

It is a balance between the price and what is included. If the watch is from a reputable source and the price is 10-20% lower than a original set then maybe, depending on the model. If the watch is super collectable and at some point you may sell or trade it then it needs to be complete with everything that came with it including the original warranty information.

A large number of Patek owners don't really care much about papers. The WIS that are on watch forums are a small minority.

If a watch has been through several owners over the years, it is very common for watches to lose original papers along the way. For a secondary market seller to get better sale price, they will request an extract if one is available.

I own one Patek from the 1990s with an Extract only. All my other Patek watches have a Certificate, but that is because I have purchased most of them new from an AD.

If its priced to reflect it I personally prefer to buy without box/papers. I only care about the watch I’d rather get it discounted and if I end up moving it on I’m okay getting less at that time because of it. I definitely make sure I’m buying from a trusted place and don’t worry about the rest.

If it is something you will keep for sure for ever then this is ok. It gives you some comfort that the watch is in fact genuine and has a pedigree.

If you might ever want to sell it again in the future full set only. If the market is soft, people will always choose a full set over something that only has an archive. And many people only understand full set. Archive is a foreign thing. The true 'expert' market that actually understands what this means is very small and you will find you will have to discount steeply or be stuck with it forever.
