I love my Filco mechanical keyboard

For those of you that enjoy the simple things in life, I recommend getting a keyboard with mechanical switches. A mechanical switch is the older and more expensive technology but feels better on the fingers. The alternative is the cheaper membrane keyboards that are not quite as satisfying.

Most mechanical switches come in the cherry mx variety. I have a keyboard in cherry mx brown and also one in cherry mx blue. I prefer brown. I went with the Filco majestouch 2 and no regrets.

I have been using a mechanical keyboard for years. I found typing fast in membrane keyboards impossible. I use a Corsair keyboard designed for gaming. I could not go back to membrane keyboards now.

Certainly agree with the mech vs membrane reco.

In a cube farm the brown is more "group friendly" for nearly silent keyclick.

Flico gets rants on Amazon for fading/short wear of the silkscreened paint on the caps. These are likely from hint/peck or visual keyentry types.

Is a mechanical keyboard the kind that you think of when you think of really old PCs or Macintosh? With a really satisfying cuh-click with each keystroke? Like halfway between a typewriter & a new(er) laptop keyboard?

I can't handle touchscreens in a car either. My car still has buttons for presets on the radio and I can just feel for them without looking. Not mechanical, but better than a touchscreen. When it's time to upgrade my car, I may need to get an older car but with less miles.

Yep, same here. My car has all the switches for heat, audio etc. my wife’s car in the other hand is like using an iPad

I love my Filco mechanical keyboard

I hate to sound pedantic, but even the mechanical switches in cars are all digital nowadays. That includes the brake pedal, throttle, gear shifter, and steering wheel. Everything is performed by microprocessors. Virtually nothing is analog or mechanical in anyway. And this is a good thing.

But I agree. I still prefer a switch, button, or dial instead of touch screens for many operations in a car.

I assembled my own keyboard.

Been doing that since 2009 - 2010. Filco makes some fine keyboards and so does Realforce, Ducky, etc.

If you live in SoCal, can you assemble one for me? I'd love one of these! Can you make the keys different colors?

I bought a Logitech G series mechanical gaming keyboard. Was immediately disappointed. Got it replaced under warranty, the new one had the same issues with keys double typing. Have you had any issues with the Filco? I love a mechanical keyboard but it’s gotta work.

This Vintage Product Series Casio DW 6600, with colour scheme inspired by 1980s computers, would go well with that.

No, I've never had any issues with the Filco at all. I have one at work and have used two at home (blue and brown switches) and all three have worked flawlessly. All of them are the Filco majestouch 2 with the 10 key included on the keyboard. There's a new Filco majestouch 3 out there that I haven't tried. I would go with the majestouch 2.

What brand of components did you use for yours? Or is it a mix?

This was an international group buy with cases and switches coming from Seoul. Came pre-assembled and you lube and assemble it yourself. PCB came ready to go (no soldering required). That one in the pic is called KMAC TKL (tenkeyless) and i forgot the name of the color scheme. I think it was Titan (short for titanium).

A lot of folks seem to like this particular color (camo) and of course, there are some custom keycaps on there as well.
