Why does the GMT have a smaller buckle?

Help a noob out? I just purchased a pre-ceramic GMT Master II and I'm unfamiliar with the shorter buckle. What's the point of this?

The clasp is dependent on the bracelet, not necessarily that it's a GMT watch.

If you need a true answer, then you need to ask about the clasp on one bracelet model as compared to another. For example, the modern billet clasp Glidelock bracelets are completely different in both function and form than earlier stamped clasp bracelets.

Well yes. It has no easy link, no glidelock or any other modern frippery. Just a few anchor points inside it. So no need to be chunky.

Submariner has a longer clasp to accomodate the diver extension links, the rest of the 5 digit sport line up have a short clasp.

Yes - Same deal with the 6 digit subs and SD and DSSD's compared to the rest of the range
