Explorer 1016 evaluation

Hello crew,
I've inherited a 1016 Explorer. The serial is 2118XXX and my research dates it to 1969 and the papers that I have for it also date it to 1969. It is in very, very good condition cosmetically, has a 78360 bracelet with what appear to be 593 end links. I think, obviously, it has been serviced. It could possibly have begun life with a MK2 matte dial and a 7836 bracelet? I love this watch and it has sentimental value so I have no intention to sell it.

1. What are your opinions on its general condition?
2. What dial version is this? Service dial 3,4,5?
3. Why does it have these EL's? Would the 580 EL's provide a better fit?

Wow! Condition of the case is outstanding on this example! Nice even patina on the hands and dial indices as well. I am having a hard time identifying the dial, however. I think you might be right that it is a service dial. The bracelet is a clue for sure.

Very nice, OP!

It would be helpful if you could post a photo of the dial without such extreme artifacts.

That bracelet is newer, the 78360 was introduced mid 70s. The 593 end link fittings are from the 80s. It might have come on a 7836 with 58 end link fittings.

The service dials in
explorer1016.**com**/matte/service-dials/
look quite similar to yours.
(Please remove the asterisk, since I don't have 10 posts yet I am not allowed to post links...)

Especially the last one on the left called "Service only Tritium".
Hope that helps.
