Buying a Rolex because of its aftermarket value

What would you do? I had an chance to buy a Rolex from my AD but declined because it just wasn't me...Then I looked on Chrono 24 and saw that watch listed for 3X the retail value. I still didn't want it...even though my AD said if I change my mind to give them a call. What would you have done? Just wondering...

Depends on which model. Guessing you’re not gonna tell us that information.

I would probably be willing to arbitrage something like that.

Realize that the asking prices on chrono24 don’t necessarily reflect the settled amount.

If anything, it would be a nice opportunity to try something out that you could easily dispose of later for less of a hit, if any.

So somebody has a full RG GMT listed on Chrono for 135K? A true optimist.

Yah, catch me if i’m wrong, but I think they sell for less than retail on the secondary?

I’m not real informed on the PM models. Watchcharts shows it at $38,000

It is a beautiful watch, however.

Chrono 24 asking prices are fantasy island, remember that you can ask whatever price you want there, does not mean you will get it. Buy what you like and will wear and enjoy. Never look a watch as an investment, you will be disappointed most of the time.

That pieces current MSRP is insane and you will lose $5-8K as soon as you walk out the door with it. I’m sure it will still be there the next time you visit. PM models are a very hard sell right now at the AD.

Cheers,

It’s under market selling under retail. Ridiculous. Based on my investment record, I would have bought it and sold it for 80% value

Been there with a BLNR and passed. It wasn't worth triple MSRP but I wouldn't have been interested if it was. You should do as you see fit. We're all different.

One thing to bear in mind is that as a private seller you won't get near maximum margin and it only takes one dodgy buyer to turn your venture upside down.

On the premise of ensuring that it is authentic, what is more important is whether you really like the watch. If you get it but are not satisfied, it is really a kind of effect that it is better not to buy it. Of course, this is just my personal opinion. After all, such opportunities are rare. You can compare and see whether the Rolex is worth buying.

Exactly that but some today think Rolex watches are just £££$$€€€ object things and little more.Once they were bought to wear and enjoy but lately those days have sadly passed.

The issue is not C24 but the premise from the OP this scenario is even factual with the model in question.

Not a fan of ‘speculators’ so I would very much like to see a speculator buy this watch and put it on Chrono for 3x retail.

I wouldn’t have bought it.
Too much hassle and dealing with con artists trying to sell a watch. Not worth it.
Then again I really don’t care making a few grand. I have enough.

Not all who are new to the hobby are like that. There are many who love to wear their watches and don’t baby them. Yes, there are also a lot of hype investors but that ship has sailed the last few years.

Yes, I’m having a hard time believing it myself. That said C24 pricing is aspirational at best at times.

If you're that far out from knowing the market, it was good that you didn't buy it.

Those are selling below retail in the secondary market.
To answer your question (irrelevant at this point), if you don't want it, don't buy it.

If I were offered a watch that was selling 3x retail on chrono, I’d probably buy it.

I don’t actively pursue such watches, but if I got a random phone call, I wouldn’t say no.

People can ask whatever they want but reality is it's not gonna sell for 3X msrp or anywhere near that.
