Given the Current Market Price Declines Are There any Non-Rolex Watches You'd Buy?

Greetings!

I'm perfectly content with my vintage DJ and BB58, but with the recent declines in used watch prices I'm wondering if there are any non-Rolex models that seem like particularly good values in today's marketplace?

I'm not looking to scalp, just curious about finding something that I hadn't considered now that prices are in decline.

Can’t go wrong with FP Journe, Richard Mille, Berneron Mirage, Simon Brette, Rexhep Rexhepi and certain Patek models.

Alternatively any watch that trades below retail is great value if you buy on the secondary market.

For watch enthusiasts, I think we might be entering into an amazing time period to pick up certain non-Rolexes. Brands released a lot of watches in the last 5-6 years, trying to capitalize on the hot watch market. Now there's a lot of inventory out there and marked price declines on the secondary market.

Some of the watches I've been looking at include:

- Tudors. Preowned ones are getting almost comically underpriced compared to what else is out there, esp considering some of the improvements to the watches in recent years.

- IWC Ingenieur. Seems like for the black/white dials, we are getting really close to 50% of MSRP for preowned ones. At that price level I think these are terrific buys considering the history.

- Grand Seiko. Specifically some of the Evolution 9 collection. The White Birch is getting close to 50% of MSRP for preowned. I'm personally interested in the Tentagraph, which also has steep depreciation that I think will get worse.

I am thinking about a 5320. Grey it’s about 40 percent off.

There is nothing in this list that has declined in price or good value, in fact the exact opposite.

Preowned Vacheron, in particular their Traditionnelle line. In terms of Patek, the 5170 and 5172 chronographs. Would not consider these at MSRP but they have been hammered in the market and have reached points where I’m considering.

RMs have come down in price to an extent, now good value on the other hand is all relative.

There are a lot of great opportunities with pre-owned Lange. If you can sport a big watch the Terraluna Perpetual comes to mind.

A 5172 at 50-55 is good deal

Breguet, Vacheron and Laurent Ferrier for me all represent good value relative to MRSP and overall watch market. Super high quality and most well below retail.

I’ve always wondered why these trade at such discounts considering how great they are.

Trying to catch a falling knife is a good way to get cut.

Brands that are falling more than Rolex (% of MSRP) in the secondary market are doing so for good reason.

Have my eyes on several Patek models.

I think most of the independents that spiked are seeing inventory gluts now too… not usually a fan of Moser but there are a couple models I am watching. I just see so much inventory…relative to production.

Not concerned about catching falling knives for Patek or other established names (the “blue chips”), when the correction has been severe for clear reasons (primarily a collapse of China demand). The smaller makers… it is more concerning seeing such a glut of inventory when their production is so low. Those have much further to fall, I think.

most of the high end complications from bigger indies are much lower than RRP
Moser Cylindrical Tourb - i paid less than 45k usd for a 3 month old watch like new
many steals around
Even MB&F LM101 - i paid around 55k usd for a 1 year old watch

I buy what I like. I find the real value which is in the sheer enjoyment of a timepiece.

Well, there are a few reasons why its 40% off. The movement is outdated and has significantly worse finishing compared to the old 240 based perpetuals like the 5140. The case is stamped vs the hand finished cases of its predecessors. This model has been designed to be industrialized and made in huge quantities with as little hand finishing as possible. This goes against Pateks historical goal of simply making the best quality watches possible.

Furthermore, the retail price has been hiked unreasonably during the past 5 years. So 40% off might look "very cheap" but its coming from a very high base.

In short, Patek has decreased quality standards and significantly increased retail prices. Thats why watches like the 5320, 5172 and even the iconic 5270 traded at almost half their asking price.

Dont fall for the "value" trap. These are not the Pateks of old. If you want that, be prepared to jump to minimum 5204 or 5370.

Agree Dan. It's about what makes you feel good, not the price or what the price may be in the future. Currently looking to get my hands on a Breguet 7057.

I saw a mint full set for 50k recently. Another that auctioned for 49k all in. Great deal for a gorgeous watch.
