Help with vintage Rolex functions
Hi guys, I am still researching my first entry level Rolex purchase. I have a couple of questions. First, I haven't yet decided if I want an automatic or not. but my question is whether all automatics also have the ability to manually wind, which would be important for me. I have a automatic seiko that you cannot wind manually and I don't like that lack of functionality.
Second, I like a watch with a date function, however I do not like the cyclops crystals that I have seen. Do they make replacement crystals for most vintage rolexes that do not have that feature? Thanks for any input. |

All Rolex automatics can be manually wound.
The cyclops is a classic Rolex trademark. You can replace the crystal if you want, or take the cyclops off. Replacements depend on the crystal size.

Thanks for that quick response. I was going to ask about how to remove the cyclops but I was able to find a video that explained it. I had thought it was part of the crystal itself. so that is very good to know. I don't know what it is about that darn thing but it just is not very appealing to me.

You may get used to the cyclops and it is very useful. Perhaps give it some time.
It is Rolex DNA and I think it makes it stand out a bit ![]()

Unless it's acrylic you can remove the cyclops if it's an older crystal without an AR coating under the cyclops. But why not look into SeaDwellers then? They don't have a cyclops (excluding the current SD43s), so you won't even have to replace the crystal or remove the cyclops.

I agree with giving the cyclops a try, as it is an iconic part of the Rolex heritage, and only associated with this brand. Also, when you get older, you will appreciate its functionality.

Yes and yes. But I recommend auto-winding and no-date. With the screw-down crown, most people like to minimize hand-winding. And the no-date dials are so symmetrical and attractive.
