5513 starting to spider

I just caught it at a weird angle. Probably nothing I can do about it now or slow it down. Kinda bummed out, really love that smooth glossy look.

That is definitely what is happening. Interesting to see the progression. Have you owned it for a long time and it’s just starting now?

Not long Dan, since last spring. But I louped it throughly. I hope it doesn't go crazy like some. If so,then maybe look for another dial.

Just document it, how is the weather where you live? I’ve wondered if humidity or lack of humidity could affect these dials.

If it bothers you sell it and just be honest about the condition, buy a matte dial 5513. You could also keep an eye out for a replacement tritum dial.

Are you absolutely sure it didn’t always look like that?

Interesting. I'd always thought that spidering occurred within a few years or not at all.

TBH, I've always found the spider dials interesting. Maybe not quite as desirable as a perfect dial, but still attractive in a unique way.

Exciting, OP! While not for everyone, I've grown to appreciate the unique-ness of such "patina" on these older Rolex pieces

I am not a fan of the cracked dials, but, if you like it, that is all that matters. On the other hand Chris, if you want a nice dial, treat yourself to one before they become increasing harder to find with each passing year.

Thanks everyone , it's possible I missed it before purchase. And even now the light and angle has to be just so. The picture was taken with a 10x lens.

I won't sell it, but i will keep an eye out for another dial, if one pops up.

Like said, it may end up looking real cool. It has been very dry this past summer, fall and winter.

Here's a couple pictures, the one in the pool was September and the other from early summer.

The fact that it happened while you owned it makes it different to me. Just keep an eye on it. I agree with Dan, they are neat and maybe you will end up liking it.

I'm building up a database of W.G.S. 5513, 16750 etc etc that tend to spider - Q. is it early serial one please ?

For what's it's worth if it goes evenly and you get the dark lumen plots alongside they can look interesting.

There is also a good no. of people who like them - I sold my even cracked, offset hyphen no date 16750 to chap in Singapore for top coinage ;-)

I'm convinced I just missed it. TBH I wasn't even looking for it, it appeared perfect from a straight on view. Check out this dial listing on C24 it too looks fine from a straight on view, but when looking at a angle it's a different story. Mine is serial # 8,7

I'll try to remember to do a update later this year. Best Chris

Thanks Chris - Yes that's an early doors (initial production) version based on SRL number, and pretty much as I expected

Cos I'm old, I remember in early to mid 8Os people crawling over each other to secure a gloss dial (remember gloss dials not seen since early 60s and much missed).

One guy I knew part exchanged his 16660 matte for the new fangled gloss dial at HALF the w.g.s price, such was the frenzy.

Dial manufacturers struggled to provide a long term reliable dial though early days as not enough time for R and Development I suspect !

Like you I suspect there are others, like SD GMT SUB Date that are effected. BTW your in box is full.
