First Time Rolex Buyer

I am engaged and my fiance's parents are offering to buy me a rolex. They said the budget is 5k and they will probably buy me a new one. I would prefer to get a silver one and I was hoping for some feedback on what you would get as a first rolex. I know its pretty limited with that budget but would love any input! Thanks!

What features on a Watch are you looking for?
Must it be new?
When you say Silver, do you mean a silver dial or a Stainless Steel case and bracelet?

Welcome to the forum chillywilly!!!
My thought is the same as chillviper....The classic Sub no date 14060!!
Its Stainless Steel and looks great.! Within budget as well....
Rob.

I would consider how you're going to use your watch. In other words, is it going to be an all situations and all times watch? If so, I'd consider a Sub. A Datejust might fit the bill, and you can usually get a better discount on them, though some find they're not casual enough to wear on a daily basis if you're a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy. I'd just go try some on and see which one sings to you, then try your best to make it work within your budget.

The 14060M is an excellent watch as already suggested. Simple, clean, and timeless design. If you're someone who needs a date, though, it's probably not for you (I think having a date feature on your watch is not a necessity, but that's just me).

yeah i kinda would like the date on my watch, but i wouldnt die if i didnt have it....i hope this is the first of many rolex, but im not in the financial situation to buy something expensive on my own....what would be a good price for those watches new? Supposedly they have some jewlers that can get good prices but I dont even know what is retail for those and what is a good price?

Welcome to the forum!
I recommened you go to a AD and see what wags its tail at you, you don't say your occupation but there are more Rolexes like Turn-o-graphs and Air Kings that might suit you more than a Sub.

Welcome to TRF!

I agree with Mikey, go to an AD and see which ones sing to you. It's very hard for a forum to make this decision for you as you'll likely be staring at your Rolex for a long time.

Good luck with your search.

Icon7 The one that sings

As Sakuraba suggested, go to a ROLEX AD and try some on. Which one do you want to try on a second time? Which ROLEX feels the best on you? A couple of models will probably appeal to you.

You may want to wait a day or two and return to the AD and repeat the process.

Then you may chose to begin your final selection.

For me the ROLEX models that sing are the Milgauss and the Explorer.

Best wishes for you and your fiance.

At that price range... you have Sub, Explorer, datejust... and maybe older sea dweller?
Like others have said... try them on at an AD...
then decide.
They look very different on your wrist vs on paper... trust me... u will probably be surprised at what you end up with.
Good luck and welcome!

If that is Irvine Calif. you're in there's a Rolex AD on Culver Drive at Irvine Center Drive, David Lee Jewelers, they have a large selection to look at. If there's one that you like you can ask what kind of price they can give you. Note the prices on the tags at that particular store include sales tax.

South Coast Plaza has a Rolex flagship store and they have one of the best Rolex collections I have ever seen!

WARNING: Once you walk in that store, you will have one tough decision on your hands.....stunning watch collection.

Good Luck!

i concur with what the others have said.. go to the nearest Authentic Dealer and check out which sings to you (in the given price range)... off the bat, i'd say go for the submariner... other options would be the explorer range (i think the explorer II is within the budget)...

if you want a less sporty watch, air kings are also great! datejusts likewise..

The sub looks best, but remember to factor in the discount. You will get more watch for their money!

Are they going to buy the watch for you or will they let you buy it? I ask because you can definitely stretch out 5k more on this board than you will at an AD. Check out the for sale section here and see all the gems going for around 5k. This forum has MANY reputable sellers who can get you just what you want, even brand new with your name on the warranty card.

I definitely agree with everyone, go try as many on as you can and if your favorite is a bit above your budget, someone here may be able to help you.

Good luck with everything and welcome to the best time-sink on the internet

go and get a full rolex catalogue and have it as your bedtime reading for a few days, then decide which way to go by highlighting the ones you like to look at, when you go to the dealer have a look at the master dealers catalogue just in case the watch you have chosen comes with a different dial combination, but take your time to get it right.

my first choices would be.
sub non date 14060
turnograph ( half sports -half dress)
milgauss
explorer 2 white dial

but at the end of the day apart from being night! its down to you, so good luck, have fun and let us know what you got with pics of course.

and always ask for advice from fellow forum members to point you in the right direction.

If you like the understated, see if you can find an 'old' Sea Dweller, definately the one for 'runs silent, runs deep'
