2009 Submariner changes
Does anyone have an idea as to how the minor but still noticeable changes to the 2009 submariner may affect the value of prior models? The changes are ceramic dial, bigger hands and luminous markers, more angled edges, new clasp.

I believe the SS Sub will be upgraded at Basel '10 (this has been confirmed by a moderator on another forum). Assumming that is true, the price of the SS Sub will be in the range of 9-10K (comparatable to the SS GMT-C). The price of the current (used) will not decrease due to the new price increase (of the new SS Sub). Just my opinion.

If they go to shiny center links on the SS Sub, I will not be buying. The over-square case and out of proportion bracelet worries me as well (too small). The existing Sub has perfect proportion to me, it flows. A ceramic bezel and maxi-hands would be nice, but the price point, at around $9,000.00 also bothers me, why? I've been offered a Deep Sea, brand new in box for $7,500.00 from my AD, which has much more to offer than a new Sub anyways.
I guess I am just too set in my ways, and love the Sub as it is in it's present form. The green Sub, with the maxi-dial, and the current case dimensions, is perfect, just lose the green, add a black ceramic bezel, keep the price to $7,000.00 or less, and I'm a buyer! If not, I'm SERIOUSLY considering the Deep Sea as my next purchase. SERIOUSLY. |

But the bigger case seems a forgone conclusion. Just look at the food chain. The Gold, TT and next year...you know it's coming. A big case Sub! Plenty of pre-owned watches from 2,3, 8 years ago to keep me happy for a while. |

The only changes in any submariner from 1988/9 to present day 2009 are so minor its hardly worth a mention. The most important change was the SEL bracelet all others fonts etc are purely comedic. If they do produce a ceramic sub it will be the latter part of 2010 before we see it in ADs.But just cannot see all the fuss over say a ceramic bezel or the new style case.Basically its the same watch with a few cosmetic changes and I would expect at far higher price. So will the sub perform any better for these cosmetic changes IMHO no the most important bit the movement will be the same.Except for perhaps there own in-house escapement parts. That will be in all the complete range as soon as Rolex has sufficient production but again IMHO no big deal would seriously doubt if it will effect the value of any sub past or present day.

The only change that I would like to see is a Daytona style clasp on the Subs we're seeing now. That would be a welcome change. But, time marches on, It'll nice to see a ceramic bezel sub, and all the goodies, but I wont be able to afford one! It's the same with the GMT, It's been just about the same for 50 years. The new ceramic GMTs are nice, but a deviation from what made them legendary.

Why would you expect a new sub to be 9k? They have always been priced near the GMT-II which is 7k and closer to 6k with a discount, which would eventually be available on the sub as they are on current subs. The comparison to the deepsea is a discounted price compared to an msrp and makes no sense either.

Basic supply and demand
I think a lot of people will want the new sub. Price will probably be about the same as GMT IIC ($7000). The price of used non-ceramic GMT's dropped when the GMT ceramic came out. I think the sub will as well. As many people trade up to the new, there will probably be a glut of the old style on the market. There are certainly plenty of SS subs out there. I'm guessing the price of a used SS sub will drop about 10-15% within a year of the ceramic release.

Having just picked up the latest Sub Date, I have to say Im glad I didnt wait. I cant believe how much I love this watch. It is totally perfect, the fit, the feel, everything. I LOVE IT!
I'm interested to see what they change. My Dads Sub is 30 years older than mine, and the difference is almost not noticable, some small size difference. I hope they dont change it that much, its been in production so long, and its perfect. I hope they keep it the same so that in 30 years my son can buy the same one. |
