Customized Rolex???

I'm 100% WIS - case in point: my wife's gift to me for our one year anniversary in March was a trip to Baselworld - and have many watches (I'm actually an Oris fan, over all) but my MOST ULTIMATE grail is a Rolex. in fact, it's a DLC-coated Daytona with bright red and white hands and a transparent caseback. Of course, Rolex doesn't sell this kind of Chuck-Norris-level bad-assery, so I'd have to have it worked over - gasp! - outside of the Racing Green walls of Rolex, Inc. Understanding the risks, and believing a watch is more than just its future value, why aren't more Rollie fans (read: us) talking about customization?

When I sold Rolexes we were taught to push the "traditional" styling of Rolex, which loosely translates to "boring" more often than not. Rolex sells more mechanical watches than all the rest COMBINED - wouldn't making yours unique be a GOAL? especially with more people acquiring more expendable income at a younger age, I'm curious as to why so few of them are making their exatly-like-everyone-else's-subs/GMTs/expies more unique, more personal, more sentimentally valuable.

your thoughts?

oh, and without further ado, the grail, curtesy of Project X Design:

That is slick!

Some people add diamond dials and bezels, but I know what you mean. Making it YOUR watch...

For me, I prefer the traditional (boring) classic styling, but I can see your point.

and i can absolutely see the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" argument. it just seems odd to me that you see people customizing their furniture and their cars and their attire to better express who they are as an individuals, but there seems to be some kind of imaginary taboo about doing that to watches - specifically Rolex (and no, changing the strap doesn;t count)

This is like customizing a Ferrari, you only do that when you can afford it.

I think that Daytona looks amazing....but for that price, I can see why people don't customize. LOL.

This is my first reply to a tread ... as I only joined a couple of minutes ago .
I did hang around reading several things and I did like this site as it is as technical ( most of the time too technical for me ) and ludic . Anyway , thank you for letting me join .
lets get back to the topic : Why buy a watch if you are going to alter it in such a way , this seems to me that you didn't the watch as it was original ? So why buy it in the first place ? One would be better off spending the money on a watch you really like and leave it that way . Sure it will not depreciate as a modified watch . This goes for cars too .

Customizing a Ferrari ??? Enzo will come out of his grave and haunt you at night if you do that . Sacrilege , no matter what kind of money you spend on it .

It doesn't look bad at all to me, But I don't really care for a black bracelet, It's a matter of preferance. That being said the price is way too much for me. I rather have a SS Daytona and another watch totaling 2 watches or a solid Gold Daytona PN

not at all for me... and when the PVD comes off tiny pieces at a time you might be upset (assuming you wear daily)... ive seen this with other PVD watches and rolexs done taht way as well, small scratches etc really cheapen the look..

im all for how they come, its why i love the company, they are perfect IMHO

Nice watch though

EVERYONE customizes their ferarris! brakes, exhaust, stereo, paint - you name it. the only thing you don't touch are the body panels. ever. the punishment for altering the shape of a ferarri is exile. to italy. with a sign that reads "i thought my Modena could use a body kit" ensuring you will be stoned to death in the streets.
