Some lady came to the door and asked if I wanted to buy a poppy. I thought she asked if I wanted to buy a puppy, so I said, "a puppy?". She goes, "no a poppy"! Now I'm clueless so I yell back at Tam, "do you wanna buy a poppy, love?", and she says "yes please", so I bought two.

OK so then I'm still clueless and walk in with these two red paper poppies, and ask why I just gave this lady a pound for two paper flowers. That's when I got a history lesson about Remembrance Day here in UK, which is coming up on the 11th and that you're suppose to wear a poppy in remembrance of those who have died in wars.

That lady musta thought I was a real idiot

Oh well. I'm learning.

Never taught the poem by a Canadian called 'In Flanders Field' ??

There is a Remembrance Day service on the 11th - 12th in St Mary's Church Callington and several others in your district.And Bruce don't worry mate if we're all truthful there is a little bit of twat in all of us,more as you get older.

Seriously, Vetran's Day in the US has nothing like that as far as I know. I feel like a little kid here, learning something new everyday

It's always a big deal here in Canada. Nationally televised ceremony in Ottawa, cut outs to local ceremonies, vets and cadets selling poppies in all public places... it's pretty much a faux pas to NOT have a poppy on your collar in Canada.

Rememberance Day used to be a national day off work/school in Canada but about 20 years ago it was religated to a government and bank holiday only.

Tam was really amazed that vetran's day in the US appeared to be nothing but an exuse for sales at the mall. Other than the odd parade and ceremonies attended by vetrans (who deserve to be remembered) and politicians (trying to act like they care), it really does seem like that's all it's become in the US.

I think it's great that the day is treated with respect here and in Canada

Out west, it is still a Statutory Holiday. Every employee gets the day off work will full pay.
We are down to only 11 of these per year.
In Vancouver, it is a huge event. Nov 11, 11 am , One minute of silence.

It is my favorite holiday. I used to wear my dress greens on that day. This year I'll be in camoflauge, but I will still honor it.

Didn't she realize that the only day that is NOT an excuse for sales at the mall is Christmas Day? Name me one other "holiday" in the US where the stores are closed. But don't worry. Give it a few more years and you won't even be able to name a single day.

Robert I'll salute you as I watch the POTUS place a wreath at the TUS here in Arlington, VA on the 11th. I have been there every year for the last 12 years don't know how many more tho I'm getting tired!

I Salute all veterans of war and conflicts as you and I are brothers in arms. Been there done that and got the t-shirt to prove it! Take care and God bless you where ever you may be and doing.

I'm surprised the US doesn't make a huge deal of it, given that the USA is about the most warring nation in the world, and it seems everyone either knows a serviceman/vet, or knows someone who knows a serviceman/vet.
