Best place to sell a Rolex (2019)

Looking to sell a Rolex (2019). Where is the best place to sell it?

Bobs watches or one of the other on line places?

Bobs made an estimate offer after sending pictures - but I don't like not getting paid up front for a sale. They provided a shipping label but suppose something happened to the watch before I got paid??

Any suggestions?

(It's the watch in the right in my avatar)

You won’t find somewhere that pays before receiving a watch. Who does that?!

The label should be insured if it’s a reputable secondary dealer.

Bob's has a good reputation, but selling on consignment is risky. Good luck!

Yes, but once they have the watch in their custody my insurance policy will not cover the Rolex should something happen to it (as I have turned it over to someone else).

I sold my 1991 Bluesy to Bob’s in August. I got offers from Bobs, Swiss Watch out of Atlanta, and DavidSW. Bob’s was the highest. They took a little off once they saw it in person… it needed service and polish, but they still gave me more than the other two offered.
Money was in my account within 48 hours of their receiving the watch.
I also sold a JLC and a Breitling to DavidSW.
They honored the original offer and funds were in acct the next day.

Nobody reputable is paying you prior to sale. It doesn’t work like that.

Bob’s is frequently mentioned as lowering their offer once you send it in. I would get offers from the boutique sellers here in the classifieds. But yes they’re not paying you before seeing it.

Yours won't, but theirs will. They will offer insured shipping and as soon as they take delivery they will assess and make you an offer.

This is the least risky and cleanest way of selling a Rolex.

Try European watch company?

Hi
I’ve sold to Davidsw and European watch company. Many different transactions with each. Both were a pleasure to deal with and payment arrived on the same day (via wire)they received the watch. All of their shipping labels are tied to insurance so if something happens to the watch in transit (highly unlikely but still a possibility), the shipping company’s insurance will pay for the value of the watch. If it’s a concern to you, agree on the declared value of the watch that will be shipped. Remember - this is their business. They know what they’re doing even though it’s your first time selling. Always buy (or sell) the seller.

I have sold to most of the big Trusted Sellers here on TRF and have always had a good experience. I have read multiple times that Bob's offers one price and then when they receive the watch they lower the price. It is frequent enough that I would not deal with them.

Bob’s is notorious for trying to nickel and dime once they get watch with all kinds of excuses to pay less. I don’t see why anyone would do business with them.

Selling private is the only way to get paid before you ship the watch

I have heard that from a retailer.

Agree on both. Very good experiences with European and David. Also have sold to Takuya and OCWatchGuy with no problems. Best advice is get prices from several before picking one.

No business will pay you before they get the watch. Nobody does that. Only private buyers must prepay.

Selling to DavidSW and European Watch Co is absurdly easy. They give a price quote, you overnight it, you get the wired funds the day they receive the watch.

I also can recommend Bob’s. They are a bit less quick, because they have their watch maker evaluate the watch and then finalize the price with you after they evaluate it (particularly to see if it needs a service). That process only adds a couple of days and in my experience the price they pay is what they quote.

Repeating what someone already said: get multiple quotes. Almost certainly, the quotes will come in within a very narrow range; but weird things can happen, for instance if a dealer has a client lined up for the exact watch you’re selling. Earlier this week I sold a watch for 50% more than what most dealers were offering, so I’m pleased I asked for several quotes.

My main concern is them holding on to the item for a few days and something happens to it - my policy will not cover that.

100%!! They’re awful. No better than a shady used car dealer imo.

David pays same day he receives or the following morning. He gives you frequent updates throughout the process. I wouldn’t worry. Myself and many others have dealt with him many times.

DavidSW is by far the safest if you're shipping. The safest is taking it in person to a local shop and selling.

Bob's pricing was fair but also skimmed a few hundred off when they got their watches from me.

As mentioned before, selling privately is the only way to get money up front.

If you are in NYC metro area you can try diamond district. I got best price for my 2021 TT DJ (yellow gold) with silver stick dial. And it was easy transaction.

If constrained to selling to a dealer, there is no single “best” option.

Dealers will have more or less attractive offers depending on their selling preferences and even time of year, inventory, financial position, etc…

Best is to try several (well known ones) and go with the best terms.

I’ve dealt with some trusted sellers here (DavidSW, Takyua etc). All were top notch and easy to deal with.

I would not sell to Bob’s Watches. They quote you one price then when they get it in they tell you another because it needs “work”. Had that happen to me twice. Never again.
