Great watch sir! If I may ask, how many times have you serviced the watch in 50 years? and has it been polished?

More power to you

Answering your queries:

Shano - no the Jubilee bracelet isn't original. The watch came supplied with an Oyster bracelet but I preferred the look of the Jubilee and fitted it in 1969.

Colin - all the parts are original except for the 24 hour hand. The original 24 hour hand had the small arrowhead but Rolex replaced it without asking me when servicing the watch in 1976. They refused to re-instal the original hand and because of that and other howlers in their quality of work I stopped using them. The acrylic glass has been replaced, along with all the seals, at servicing but apart from that it's all 50 years old. (Actually, the watch was manufactured in November 1966). It hasn't been polished as such - I just give it a gentle wash and polish with a soft cloth every week or so and I think it still looks ok.

Winger - I paid the princely sum of £84 in 1967. It was only years later that I realised that I was ripped-off in one respect - although I received full documentation with the watch, Watches of Switzerland didn't provide me with a box for it. They told me that a 'display box' would cost me a further £25 - just work that out as a percentage of the cost of a new GMT and you can see why I didn't bother! I always intended constantly wearing the watch anyway, so it would never see that inside of any box, but I do feel I should have been provided with one.

Thanks again, everyone.

Stan.
Certainly a great history....interesting point you make about the cost of the box as a percentage of the watch itself.... significantly high indeed! I have never come across that before and just assumed that all Rolexes even back then, came with their boxes as part of the overall price? Anyway, great to see it's still in such fine condition!

Stan, this is, without a doubt, one of the nicest stories I've come accross in my years on TRF. Just amazing. Big congrats to you, sir, and here's to another 50 years of enjoyment of that beauty!

great story. Interesting to see how much they have increased over the years - even factoring in inflation....
