It is not comparable to the 80s at all. This comment shows you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Are all the articles I've read about Rolex thievery exaggerated? It can't be... the internet says it's not safe to wear your watches. Clearly it must be an anomaly that nothing happened to me and my watch over the weekend.

Perhaps I'm losing my mind

Not going to lie, even as a lifetime New Yorker, I’m definitely more conscious of my surroundings and vigilant when riding the subway. Lots of crimes in the city especially with all these crazy people riding with you at all hours.

I wore my Daytona on the subway yesterday to go shopping on 5th Avenue with my wife. She ended up purchasing a Chanel bag that came with the biggest box and bag known to man. We ended up riding the subway home. We definitely didn’t feel comfortable and felt like we were a target. In retrospect, should’ve just taken an Uber home. We live in a different world today unfortunately.

I usually bring a cheap plastic bag - Target, Walmart, 99 Cent store, et al to put fancy purchases in. And that’s just walking to the parking structure. I’m in LA and there have been cases of people getting followed and robbed just walking to their cars or waiting for an Uber.

52nd and Lexington? (That's pretty close to the heart of midtown.) Pretty daring!!!!

Strangely or not, a couple of weeks ago I was picking up a watch in Boston and they insisted that I take a brown paper bag to carry the purchase in. They offered to fold in the green Rolex bag which I declined.

Totally, NYC is a gentrified shopping mall compared to the way things were in the 80's. Anyone can just look at the numbers and see crime is up, but up from historically low levels pre-covid and still much much lower than the 80's. Quality of life has suffered a bit since covid but still 99% of people don't care what watch you're wearing and for the other 1% you buy insurance. I walk my dog 3 times a day, take the subway, go grocery shopping, even worked a street fair a few weekends ago, no one cares what I'm wearing on my wrist.

For some purchases I ask for a non brand bag or I run into a Starbucks etc. and get the biggest bag they have if it fits for item

i wouldn't say 99% don't care. a lot of people notice and you can easily spot glances if you're paying attention. i would say a lot of people notice, but almost no one says anything. people definitely know what a rolex looks like nowadays, but just because they don't compliment you or say something doesn't mean they don't care. the glances are what makes you feel uncomfortable now because of the crime levels

The two times I have bought a Rolex, I’ve brought my own bag and put the watch in that. I am the biggest skeptic of the Pearl clutchers over crime, but even I am not going to carry the green bag in the open down the street.

So how do you account for an average office occupancy of under 5% the pre-pandemic rates, during the low of the pandemic, but crime rates double in some cases year over year. Absolute level of crimes no, but per occupancy (and not talking Census population, but folks on the ground each day) very similar to rates in the 80's. Historically Manhattan's business district population during the work day has been 10x the population during the overnight hours. Regardless the point is to be safe.

I wear my nice watches all the time but also depends on where im going. If I'm going out clubbing its the Apple Watch. esp due to the summers here I carry a light jacket I can cover it if it seems sketchy.

Because crime RATES are calculated as incidents per capita of RESIDENTS? While you bring up a good point, I'm not sure it changes the validity of the data.

office occupancy is slowly coming back to normal, at least for 2 or 3 days of the week. it's not as empty in the city anymore and i would say almost close to what it used to be. but i only go to work tues-thurs so i imagine the other days are pretty dead, also it's summer so people might wanna get out, might be much less active in the winter but remains to be seen (this past winter was empty)

I wear my GMT and my Glock everywhere. I call it 'hunting over a baited field'.

Let the games begin.

I am sure your lawyer will greatly appreciate this comment during discovery should you ever need to use your firearm
