At one point, you were likely excited to get the speedy. Did that change? Do you use the chronograph for things, would you like to keep a speedy in your collection? These are the questions I’d be addressing before making a swap. Although the prospect of a new watch weighs heavily on you now, losing a piece from your rotation has more impactful in the long run. I’ve found that most of the people that swap watches around think about what they had a lot more than what they have, save the most recent acquisition. In the end, do what actually makes you happy.

For me personally….I like an OP41 more than a Speedy. So it’d be 2 Rolex for me. I don’t want a watch “just because” of its horological importance, history, etc…it’s nice but, not a deciding factor. If I needed the chrono, it’d be a harder decision….possibly. I buy/wear what makes me happy when I look at my wrist.
Do what makes you happiest is my advice. |

Two completely different watches!
To me, the speedmaster puts a smile on my face so I wouldn’t make that move

I would only if OP at msrp from ad. Then add a used speedy again down the line.

No, I had the blue OP41 in my hand at the AD and turned it down. Very generic looking to me, I'll go as far as to say rather boring, IMHO. The Speedy is a really cool piece.

I'm not a chrono guy.
So that would be a yes.

Matter of taste of course. I wouldn’t trade my Speedies for anything. I personally am not a huge fan of the new models and the new bracelet. So if anything I’d trade the 3861 for a 1861 or 861. I can’t think of a circumstance where I’d prefer an OP over a Speedmaster. The OP to me is the most generic yet still showy Rolex that will get noticed even by non-watch people (usually not in a good way). Not that it matter what other people think if you like it and are committed to it.
In my world I’d trade the 3861 for an older model - and trade the 6 digit Sub for a nice 5 digit 40mm no date or older Sea Dweller. My one-watch-collection would always be a Speedmaster. Most significant watch ever made that doesn’t cost 6 figures. |

If you find the Speedmaster a bit bland there are options. I'm always looking for more, not less brand diversity.

I would do this if you can get an OP41 at retail. I would get the bright blue or green dial as you already have the sub.

Like others have mentioned, they are two very different watches. But IMO if you want the OP then go for it. You can always add a Speedy to the collection later.

In case your Speedy is on the bracelet, I would first try pairing it on leather with the Sub. That make give you more variety than two SS watches.

I would say keep the speedy. It is unlikely that you will get a good price from greys in this environment and they are increasing in price so to add it back later on will mean paying more. But if it is an OP 41 green from an AD then perhaps yes. Green one is very cool and with good market value you should be able to break even.

OP, the fact that you are "debating" tells me you're not in love with your Speedy. Even though this is TRF, I think most here will say keep the Speedy over an OP41; however, if it's not the watch for YOU, then I would do it. Personally though, I would keep it.

I would keep the SM. I had a chance to buy the OP 41, black dial. It just didn’t do it for me.
I’m currently waiting for the 2022 Air King. |

You can do it for now, but I am pretty sure you will be wanting to buy one or another speedmaster in a few years again. Speedmaster is like a gateway drug, and very addictive.

If I could have only two watches, they would be a Submariner and a Speedmaster Pro. So my answer would be a No.

Girlfriend and I got matching Silver Dial OP's this year. 41 for me and 34 for her. Beautiful watches and they have special meaning, but I don't wear mine much.
I wouldn't have purchased it for any other reason. Keep the Speedy unless you just don't like it. |

A refreshing perspective, and I agree completely. The "First watch on the Moon!!!" does nothing for me. But the design ethos of the simplest, entry-level Oyster Perpetual is so classic and perfect, it is a far superior watch in my eye and so beautiful and pleasant on wrist. Paired with a timeless dial option like black, white, or silver, you have an amazing all-around daily piece for any situation.

Short answer is NO!
However, since you are asking that means you have been thinking about it and that’s fine. Not every watch is for everyone. If you like Datejust more than Speedmaster than go for it. Do what makes you happy. |

I have both an 1861 Speedmaster and a coral red OP41. As everyone else says, two very different watches. I wear both of mine, most use goes to the OP for its simplicity, but I wouldn’t want to sell either. If you can get an OP at retail I would just add one or wait until you can without having to sell something.

If you like the OP better then, yes do it. You can always get another Speedy if you regret your decision.

I much prefer Rolex over Omega but I would not make that trade. Speedmaster is more robust and imo, a much cooler watch.

You can read my whole debacle how I purchased a speed master and the following day I was offered an op41 which was my first choice. Long story short I ended up getting the OP about a month later and I love the OP.
Unless you buy the speedmaster at a steep discount you will get hosed selling to a trusted seller. The offers I got were 4k-5200 on my 7200 msrp speedmaster so I kept it for now. Now that I have my Op I enjoy owning the speedmaster more than before I had the Op as the op is the watch I wanted to acquire first and then a speedmaster. Also, in my opinion, there is really nothing entry level about the Op aside from its price. The quality and features is just as good as other models costing 2-4k more money in the Rolex lineup, it’s a tremendous “value” in the Rolex catalogue. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
