I love a good Bordeaux and you can spend your budget and much more for a Chateau's good vintage. I've spent more than I care to think about over the years. I would suggest if you want to gift an excellent wine that will age well and may impress him with your out of the norm thought I would look closely at a selection of Super Tuscans. Some of the best wine in the world and well respected by most if not all connoisseurs. Your budget would allow for 3 to 5 bottles from some excellent vineyards and superb vintages. Most if not all can be found online through wine-searcher. Here's the list I would recommend.

1971 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT
2019 Massetino Toscana IGT
2019 Marchesi Antinori Solaia Toscana IGT
2019 Le Macchiole Messorio Toscana IGT
2020 Bibi Graetz Colore Toscana IGT

I’ve committed to a three bottle pack of 100 acres morgan creek cab. Supposedly just lights out good, and I figured three would be much more practical or fun since he likes having friends over for dinner parties. They’re the one couple in our group who never wanted kids, so now they host all of us parents once a month or so.

I have consumed a limited amount of the newer vintages, simply because they are so expensive upon release and at 72yrs old I can no longer expect to cellar them for a couple of decades.
The issue is that Grange is a wine that really needs a minimum of a decade and preferably two before it is starting to drink at it's best. Personally, I never opened a bottle less than 20 years old. On that basis, I would be trying to buy something with at least a decade on it.
Even though the Cellarmasters will equivocate about which years are the best vintages (and prices reflect this) really, there are NO poor vintages.
If you decide to go in this direction, there is a fair bit of information on the net on Australian retailer sites about vintages/prices which provides a bit of insight to which are considered the most desirable vintages and what they sell for. Good luck with your quest.

You say your friend is a label snob.
How about a case of vintage Dom Perignon?

The cheapest Petrus ($3K) is probably outside of your budget.
But, if you want to impress.......

Scarecrow is great. I put in for a wish this year, thinking it was 2 more bottles, but actually 2 more three-packs (6 bottles). No worries, it won't be granted. Wrong. Now have $6k coming my way! Hope 2021 is a great year!

It's all so relative.....I know people who would easily spend $2k + on a bottle of wine, but wouldn't dream of spending anywhere near $2k on a watch.

That’s what I was thinking go magnum.

I don’t drink anything that expensive, but I have some mid-range stuff like Quintessa 2014 magnum in the nice walnut box.

As your public relations advisor, it's my recommendation to stop associating with such swine. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

This strategy is safer than a single, corked Chateau Margaux 1995.

The thing about gifting a single bottle of a vintage big label wine is the risk of bad handling over the past 30-odd years.

I've had to find something important for the important deed an important person performed. When it came to alcohol of any type, distilled spirits are a better choice to me. A 30 y.o. single malt for the scotch aficionado, for example.

Thanks in advance
Hey! wine guy here. My recommendation is spend around $500-600 for a bottle and get him a small wooden crate with 3-5 bottles. He'll get a lot more enjoyment out of it, age some, drink one with you, etc.

I would go French Bordeaux, Pommerol, maybe Chateau Lafleur-Petrus or Chateau Palmer. (if he's a big red drinker)

Or go Burgundy (if he's a pinot or Chardonnay drinker) and get a Gevrey Chambertin or for white, a Chassagne Montrachet or Meurseault.

Also, another argument for not spending all on one bottle is that with age, you may be getting him a rancid bottle. You don't know it's history and there's nothing more frustrating than spending $2k to then end up with vinegar.

2k dollar gift? Can I be your friend? Seriously though, Chateau Latour is the creme of the crop imo... 09 or 10.... Petrus normally goes easily beyond 2 grand. Go with Masetto instead, or Sassicaia for a nice super Tuscan.

I'd go for a nice Burgundy, Romanee Conti and some gourmet Dijon Mustard.
