I went with the 111 because I wanted a sandwich dial, see thorugh case back, and a seconds hand. The 111 fit my budget at the time and i have enjoyed wearing it (its my work watch). The manual wind is a bit of a pain but not that big of a deal. Now, I am very interested in the 312 and may sell the 111 to buy it. The 312 has all of the criteria above plus it has an in-house movement, date, 1950's case and its an automatic.

312 still gets it for me (luckily!). The looks of the face and the 1950 case works well.

i think you should really try them on, there is a weight difference to consider.
I went with the 312, it had everything i wanted. Sandwich dial in person is so clean and 3d ish. I am sorry if this was brought up but is money a factor? this may answer your question more than opinions. |

Got 000 now... but may think again about 111..... this PAM thing really confuses me... everything is interesting and has their own unique character in it...

Absolutely love the hand wind Pam's, but if you want auto I personally like the 312, although a lot of people aren't thrilled with the 312 and thus a lot are for sale on other forums.
Can't go wrong with either of the three, which doesn't help you, I know...but best bet is to try them all on and see what gives you the spark! The 312, like ocwatching says is best bang for the buck! Cheers! |

Would you mind to explain a bit more regarding people not being thrilled with the 312? Thanks..... |

I like 312 better after having tried it on along with the 111. I never liked the cyclops look so was never interested in the 104 but it is still a great looking watch.

I'd choose between the 104 and the 312. The manual wind can get tiring. And the deployment clasp on the 104 is much more comfortable and easy to use than the 111. and the date function on th3 104 comes in handy. Also, the 111 doesn't have a "hacking mechanism" (i.e., you cannot stop the seconds hand to reset the watch). The 104 dial with its painted numbers actually stands out more than the sandwich dial.
But when you compare the 104 to the 312, if you can afford the $1000+ difference, the advantages are the display back, the 9 on the dial, the lack of cyclops on the date, the beautiful and thicker 1950's case, the matt finish case, the sandwich dial (if you like that better). However, you lose the deployment clasp on the 312. |

111. I wanted the 104 when ANY Panerai was still hard to get. 'Settled' for the 111 because I couldn't wait and have grown very fond of it. When I had the chance to buy a 104 later the date window didn't appeal to me and I grew to love manual wind. The exposition window in the back is also very nice. For me the 312 wasn't comfortable as it sits high on the wrist as some of our good friends here pointed out.
Good luck with your decision and know that you can't go wrong with any. |

The 111 is definately iconic. But the 1950 case is really a great look - part polished/part matt - and gives it a great presence on the wrist. My vote goes to the 312.

I would stay away from the inhouse 3 day movement for now. Read several threads about the watches need to be send back for service.

Autos all the way. I had a few manual PAMs (111 and 112). I got sick of winding them. My last Panerai was a PAM 104 and loved it. I am now on the look-out for a 312, 351 or 359...

Nothing beats trying all of them to check which one truly sings to you. When I was looking for my first PAM, I was also checking out the base models, the 312 and the 104. I really liked the 312 but, as stated earlier in another post, it sits higher and wears bigger than the 104.
As I wanted my first PAM to be an auto, with seconds hand and a date, the 104 then comes as a no brainer. Good luck.

111 1st for me. The case it just perfect to me.
312 2nd for me. I think the 1950 case is ok, but looks much better in 47mm and domed xtal. That said, I think the 1950 case in 44mm looks better without the domed xtal. 104 last. I don't like Panerai's cyclops.
