I have and love both. The 2 you are choosing between the SD is an absolute no brainer, full provenance for 2k premium must be the deal of the month

I would go SD, it’s the perfect Rolex all around. But hey, we all know you can’t go wrong here!

if this question was asked 3yrs ago before sd4k was discontinued, I am pretty sure most would pick the sub. The sd4k was a slow seller with huge discounts.

Yes, but the SD4K is the better watch. More special for sure.

Always less popular because most people saw it as a more expensive sub without the trademark cyclops - so what was the point. Those of us who get what the SD is all about know better

If the SD4K is reachable take it you cannot go wrong with that but again it also comes down to what you would like most sometimes imo satisfaction is primary

I’ve had both. I’ve had many Subs. I currently have both an SD4K and a Hulk. Personally I find I don’t really care for the SD4K ad much as I thought I would. It wears weird and small. Plus I like a cyclops. Since I care absolutely zero about “history” or any of that kind of stuff I just don’t care for it. Probably going to sell it at some point.

I own both, and will tell you as long as you remove the Diving Extension, the SDC4K is far more comfortable with its silhouetted case! Yes it’s taller, but only by a smidgen! Let’s put it this way, it’s less tall than the clunkier Super Case is wide! This actually results in the SDC4K wearing more like a 5 digit 16610 Sub on the wrist! Many threads in the past have discussed this being the case...and having both I will certainly agree!

See this is where I tend to disagree. Whether it is a “better” Watch is really a subjective opinion.

If it’s “better” because it doesn’t have a cyclops, that’s a personal choice.

If it’s “better” because it is more closely related to the look and construction of a historical SD, again personal choice.

If it’s “better” because of the added water resistance and HRV, neither of those things are going to be touched by 99% of the people buying it, so IMO that’s like saying a G-Wagon is better than an SUV when you’ll only ever drive it to the mall.

For those that prefer it, that’s perfectly fine. I just think it’s a bit disingenuous to say it’s “better”.

116610LN for me. Classic and very comfortable to wear. Also big time partial to fat lugs

Agreed.

Subjectively, whatever works best for the owner is the better suited watch.

When comparing the two objectively, however, the SD is the “better” more capable of the two.

In my opinion do NOT buy without paperwork. Unfortunately the watch community puts so much emphasis on paperwork that you limit the potential appreciation and also massively narrow the buyer's market if you were to ever need to sell.

The lack of paperwork had me extremely hesitant not only for value retention but also for authenticity verification purposes as well.

The SD comes with everything and was in very good condition. It fit my wrist well and I loved the glide lock clasp. The current owners wrists were bigger than mine but adjusting the glide lock allowed me a great without any link adjustments right there on the spot.

I’m really liking the exclusivity of this piece over, say, a Sub. I also like that it’s even more over built than a sub is. Will I use all of this robustness? Likely no. But it’s a cool and comforting feeling knowing I’ll never use it to its potential.

The lack of paperwork just makes life harder IF you ever have to re-sell, its just the way buyers want it. As for the SD it is a lovely watch, it depends if it wears nicely for you and it seems like it does. Enjoy it in good health!

A service alone on the sub will cost $700 minimum, and the SD is more unique capable. So, I advise going SD4k

The inset date on the SD dial drives me nuts. With a cyclops it's fine, but otherwise it looks out of place to me. Also the end link fitment doesn't flow the way the sub and most other Rolex do. The thickness while probably fine, would bug me day after day as it tends to on my Breitling.

It comes down to personal preference, and I prefer the Sub... personally!

I’m not sure why the service costs of the sub matter? The SD will cost a decent chunk of change to service as well, I’m certain?

I agree the SD is more unique and capable though.

After trying on the SD4K I think I know my choice. It fit very well on my wrist, much better than I anticipated.

Because I thought you said the sub was older and will require service sooner. The SD4k newer won’t need that for a whole, so the $2k difference then become more like $1.3k

Ah, you are correct, I follow you now.

The Sea Dweller is a 2014 example so it’ll need servicing (by Rolex standards) next year. The Sub was a 2012 example with no service history so I could only assume it hasn’t been serviced in the 5 year interval Rolex recommends.

I’d probably say 8 to 10 year intervals.
That would still put the Sub closer to service
than the SD...

116600 for me......no maxi case unless there's a really compelling reason.
