I have mixed feelings about Bottas. On the one hand he was brought in knowing Mercedes didn't want a fast driver to compete with Lewis so that Merc and Lewis would win based on the cars utter dominance. The fact that RBR has produced a car that is on par with Mercedes in the last year of this formula is surprising. I don't want to harp on about Max, but Sergio Perez was brought in with much fanfare, but in 13 races this year, he's only been on podium 2 times so he's not really helping Max as a wingman and Max is still leading the championship. That's why Bottas had to go in favor of Russell.
As an aside, Bottas can compete with Lewis in qualifying because he always has a fresh set of tires, but once tire management in race situations is required, he goes backwards. Russell will challenge Lewis straight away, but I think he will need a little more seasoning to be a complete driver as he's shown lapses in judgement and crashes with Williams. All that said, it's going to be an incredible future with all the talented young drivers in F1. The battles between Max, Charles, Lando, George and even Gasly if he gets in a good car will be epic. |
